pics of new year's day 2013 run through central Paris

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

in 2011 one of my goals for 2012 was to take regular monthly pictures of my run, to watch the seasons pass. but i never had a phone or camera til October, then i had to learn to use the hand-me-down iPhone. and so for today's run, i started figuring it out. here are a few (a lot of) pictures. Because today is a holiday, the Pompidou expressway that runs along the Seine on the Right Bank was closed for traffic (as it generally is on Sundays). Because of this (and because i needed to pass the post office to mail some checks and check if a couple of stores were open), i adapted my route somewhat. let's start with a picture of the route:

once i got to the highway, i headed west just to pont neuf and then back east to Sully Morland. here is what it looked like:

then i crossed the Sully Morland bridge to run heading west, with a view of the splendid apse of Notre Dame, unblocked by foliage in the winter. this view is probably a large part of why I run.

and then on around towards City Hall

so now, when my status says lovely, or beautiful light, or Notre Dame ... you will know what I mean.

Beautiful - I can't believe I missed this when you first posted it!
Your approach to Notre Dame by the Seine was the same as my very first sight of it on my first visit in 2008.
I will miss staying in the 5th - but it will be lovely to have a longer stay in 2014 and maybe even run!

Ah, you are living my dream--to live and run in Paris. Like many others, one visit to Paris and it began my a lifelong love affair with the city. I am going back for the 4th time this fall. We rent an apartment and stay 3 weeks, which is not nearly long enough : ) I have found that it is always painful to leave no matter how long we stay. I need to trim down as there is always lots of walking that I actually look forward to and then the wonderful baguettes, cheeses, and wine.

I use to be a runner too, but never got a chance to run in Paris. I can only imagine what a high that must be. Unfortunately, I think running is in my past due to a touchy back and a foot issue.

I am new to Spark People and working on loosing 30 lbs before I head back to Paris. You are an inspiration. Thank you for the wonderful pictures.

Oh my! That is beautiful! Amazing!

I live in a city that was founded in 1859. Even old buildings around here are seldom older than 100 years. Ground breaking for the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris was 850 years ago! The construction took 183 years!

Amazing! Thanks for the great photos.

I have never even seen an intact structure half as old! (I have seen old indian ruins in the US South West that are 1,500 year old - but that is way different)

What a great run! I am happy for you.

Thanks, Bruce

What a beautiful sky and light indeed! It was a perfect time for pictures. It was lovely to see the ice ring outside the hôtel de ville, I missed it this year!

To say this is beautiful would be an understatement! Thanks for sharing your pics- looking forward to lots more! I haven't made it to Paris YET, but have been to London and Ireland. Always think how lovely it would be to walk/run in those areas. I love my home and neighborhood, and there are countless beautiful places here in the States, but I always say there is nothing more beautiful than Europe!

Based on all the comments above, I would suggest we all plan a trip over to see you!! emoticon

Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing. Paris is beautiful, there's no doubt about it. It's just getting there that's the pain. Time, money and hassle involved.

Or sheer laziness... Hmmm...

Hugs and hope to see you soon
