Preggo Update: Week 22

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

I totally wrote out an update last week, but by the time I got around to finishing it, I was 22 weeks already! Time it truly flying at this point.

How far along?
22 weeks this week! Baby should be a little over a pound now and the size of a spaghetti squash.

Stretch marks?
Nothing new.

Weight Gain?
Yuck. This week I piled on 2 kilos! How in the heck?! I am hoping it's just water weight- {but with all my overindulgence on sweets and cookies, I'm sure it's not} and that it will go away. Short of it's magical disappearance, I hope it stays the same for at least 4-6 weeks. This puts me at a total of 4 kgs or 8.8 pounds {eek!!}

Not so awesome. I have been blessed with some crazy hip pains that are impeding restful slumber. But I am determined to not complain or let it shatter my joy.

Best moment this week?

On Christmas day my youngest sister (11 years) was able to feel the baby kick- which was really special. I am also attracting more pregnancy comments from loved ones. Now that I'm showing clearly, I love the little extra attention. :) I also started refinishing the nursery furniture and got a small set of cloth diapers. It's starting to feel very very real at this point which is entirely exciting.

Everyday! He is now big enough that I can feel him somersaulting. He's so strong that at first it makes me a little nauseous!

Food cravings?
Some, but nothing consistent. Lately a glass of cold milk goes down really well.

Anything making you queasy or sick?
Still against chicken. And veggies. {SAD SAD SAD!!!} I have liberated eggs from my anti eat policy and have one or two every once in a while.

Labor signs?
I had a strange belly tightening the other day in one section of my belly. So weird. I thought it was a braxton hicks contraction. It makes me nervous to have one so early, but apparently {according to google} it's nothing to write home about because it was only in one spot and could have been a muscle cramp. Crisis averted.

Belly button in or out?
Still in.

Happy or moody?
Joyful and blessed. It was a great week.

Looking forward to...?
Next week's appointment and scan. I need to make the major decisions about where I am going to deliver. Thereare only 4.5 months to go and I want to make sure all the details are ironed out early. Things can go quite slowly in SA, so the sooner I get it patted down the sooner I can relax about something going wrong! The last thing I want is to give birth in a government hospital *shutter*

The local private hospital is fine... but a bit archaic in it's practices. My siblings, hubby's siblings and our friends won't be able to visit the baby in the hospital- only view him through the glass case. Which seems so incredibly old-fashioned. Also, my youngest sister is under 13, so she won't be able to visit in the ward at all. I am having a hard time finding out hospital policies about the birth itself, but I get the feeling that there is a lot of red tape that will prevent me from having the unmedicated experience I want. I also found a private Maternity hospital that will assist an unmedicated birth plan and will allow me to deal with the visitors/visiting hours that I choose. Hubby and baby will also be able to stay with me through the night. It's just a matter of cost, and I need to see if I can swing the fees :) *fingers crossed* I'm looking forward to resolving this anxiety. It kept me up thinking about it all night last night, and I am ready to lay this plan to rest. This week I'll meet with my OB and chat to her about my fears and reservations, and visit the alternate hospital too. Hopefully next week I'll have the insurance go ahead to have the baby at the hospital I desire :)

Plan for this week?
Clean up my eating. Seriously. I cannot gain weight as fast as I currently am. I think my hip pain is from the sudden gain and I hope it will go away if I can manage my gain rate.

What I am planning on doing for my own reference:
- high protein breakfast- preferably eggs. Cookies and tea is not a good breakfast.

- fruit or dried fruit for a snack

- Serving of grains with lunch. Paired with protein and whatever veggie I can stomach at the time.

- High protien dinner with meat. 1 starchy veg and 1 non starchy veg.

- Glass of milk
Make better snack choices - one treat every week. NOT A treat a DAY!{--- downfall of this week.

So that's my pregnancy week in a nutshell! I hope you all had a blessed festive season and a Happy New Year!

I love seeing these pregnancy updates, especially when they answer the millions of questions I have for you. I was extra curious how you wanted to give birth and you answered my question. :)

Hey there! If you are having hip pain attributed to sleep, and you haven't tried this yet, get a maternity sleep pillow. It's C-shaped, so it supports head and belly, then another big chunk goes between your knees. It helps you stay on your side too (kind of spooning it). In a pinch, just put a regular pillow or body pillow between your knees - you need the space to keep your hip and pelvis aligned and supported

It's been a lifesaver for me, I've had virtually no hip or back pain (33.5 weeks along) except the other night, I must have flipped in the night and didn't take the pillow with me, so my knees were together - hip pain for 2 days!
