2013 - a year of challenges
Monday, December 31, 2012
2013 is going to bring some challenges in my life. My husband, Steve, is expecting open heart surgery some time between May and October. His next tests in April will help determine when his upper aorta needs to be replaced.
So how does this affect me?
1) I'll need to give him full time care for the first 8 weeks.
2) That means my chorus will need to find a substitute or replacement director. I'm facing that with a lot of mixed emotions. I'm ready to hang up my hat, but I think I'll miss the joy I find in this hobby.
3) I've just got to get my weight down so that I'm healthy and have the strength to help him. At least my job as a programmer is secure this year, so I don't have to worry about that right now. I need their health coverage for Steve! They have a wellness program in which I am participating. If we can demonstrate effort in getting our BMI's down to 30 or less, they charge us less for the health coverage. It's a win-win situation. I'm finding that tracking my meals in SparkPeople is helping me to stay on track.
4) My mom is turning 90. She lives by herself, on the other side of the country in Downeast Maine. I worry about her. We plan to have a family gathering to celebrate her birthday next July.
So I plan to use this blog to track my efforts this year to get ME healthier. Right now, my weight is my sole health issue. I've been significantly lighter before. I can do it again. The biggest enemy for me is my sedentary job - sitting in front of a computer all day. I HAVE to get my body moving. This cold weather is deterring me right now. Gotta find a way to get past that.
Here's to a good 2013!
