Happy New Year - From the Inside of an Exploded Potato!

Monday, December 31, 2012

Thing One is learning to drive. Dare to ask whether she is pleased over the notion, or excited over the process? In the infamous words of “The Cat in the Hat”, she does not like this; not one little bit. Our generation could not wait to get our licenses; it could not happen quickly enough as it was the alleged key to greater social freedoms.

A whole generation of music even was dedicated to this late ‘70s 16 year-old rite-of –passage: Two Tickets to Paradise, Born to Run, Thunder Road, Paradise by the Dashboard Light ,etc. Now my teenage years never came remotely close to the stories in those songs, but at least the possibility conceptually existed. For the current teens, emancipation is more closely associated with a cell-phone or a Facebook account. They just are in no hurry, and to us it seems crazy (though as concerned parents of a pretty girl we are privately happy enough to wait).

Driving remains a life’s skill. It also could be handy to have another driver in the house. Suffice it to say that getting her to prioritize time behind the wheel is challenging to say the least. There’s always something she would be doing. That said, today I coaxed her out for an hour with the promise of a lunch date with Dad. Our destination: AKA-Friscos in Frederick, MD. We chose this inasmuch as this was New Year’s Eve and the last day before my full-blown re-dedication to Spark and perhaps her renewal of her “Spark-Teens” membership.

Friscos has an industrial warehouse atmosphere, and caters to an upscale business clientele in an outer Washington DC suburb. Its sandwiches and salads are inventive and excellent. However, its claim-to-fame is a creation called the “Exploded Potato” which Thing One loves and made it (for her) worth the ordeal of another hour of behind-the-wheel time. Now apparently the Exploded Potato is locally legendary, so much so that it even has its own Spark page for the recipe!

So my last hurrah was to have one serving too. Tomorrow morning it’s back on the scale, back to the gym, back to tracking everything. And back for another hour behind the wheel. Anyone with me on this?

Happy New Year to all! Oh and one more thing - if I'm awake a minute past 10PM tonight, rest assured it's someone else's idea.

Well, Boss, you're right - that does sound like a form of happiness... I may have to try the un-real deal. :)

Happy New Year Mark to you and your family. I was up until 11:10 according to my fitbit and was rudely awakened at midnight by fireworks set off by the neighbors. There were pretty though. I have a gorgeous niece, she is the one in my profile picture, she doesn't want her license either. What is wrong with kids today?

Thanks for my New Year chuckle. As a parent who survived training two children how to drive, and now have two kids who are excellent drivers, I can tell you that the journey is worth the suffering. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you. My version of this story has something called a 'chocolate lava cake' and a nephew but the concept is the same. Looking forward to getting back on track. emoticon

They don't even make them parallel park anymore on the driver's test!
Ah well, in this day and age, just make sure they don't use the phone behind the wheel - keep it in the back seat, for goodness sake.
Happy New Year and may all your potatoes be nonfat.
