Looking back

Monday, December 31, 2012

Looking back over the past year, I can see growth, change, and progress. I see it in myself, but also in my son, and in my students, and co-workers. I am a LONG way from PERFECT, but then someone once said that once we get to "perfect" our purpose has been fulfilled and then we DIE, so having a long way to go and not being FINISHED or PERFECTED may mean I have a while yet to live.

I think that I have come to some new insights about health and weight and maybe more importantly have been reminded of things MY BODY and MY MIND knew but just refused to practice.

You really DO have a choice about what goes into your mouth - few of us have someone else FEEDING us - hurt feelings because we don't eat things that aren't healthy for us or that we don't want, don't need, and/or can't fit into our programs are REALLY the problem of the person trying to guilt, lure, or shame us into eating them. Don't fall for that! Remind those who LOVE you that you are making choices that will improve your health and increase the quality of your life, NOT REJECTING THEIR LOVE.

We can learn to appreciate the flavors, textures, and nutritional benefits of whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, etc. - once we wean ourselves from the overly sweet, overly salty, overly processed foods and drinks that are so tempting and addictive - once the overlies are washed out of our system, water tastes refreshing and delicious, a berry or an orange is plenty sweet enough, and even potatoes and corn can be eaten without adding salt because their own flavors are yummy.

We DO have time to exercise, cook at home, AND still do all of the other things that currently demand so much of us. We can get up and leave the remote behind for a while without it getting lonely and crying for attention. We can take our kids along as we walk, hike, play, bike or whatever. We can walk during our lunch hours and still find time to eat something healthy IF WE CHOOSE TO.

We ARE worth the time, trouble, hassle, and effort to take care of US. We don't always have to be LAST in line for our attention, our time, and our love. We deserve it and we earn it and we NEED it so we can share US with so many others who NEED part of US.

Food is fuel for our bodies and it is NOT necessary to fill the tank until it spills all over the ground to have ENOUGH. We can sometimes even live when our tank is only partly filled - a half tank of gas will take us a LONG way before we need to refill it and it is NOT always necessary to FILL it up. Snacks, planned meals, and healthy portions can work to keep our energy and spirits up, we don't HAVE to overdo it.

We are pretty wonderful people regardless of what others may have told us in the past. We are good, loving, helpful, kind, generous of time, money, and energy. Some might even say that we are people that hold the world together. We are the people who wipe others' tears. We are the people who make peace and who keep in touch. We are the people who are brought to tears by the suffering of others. We are entitled to respect and kindness from not only others but from OURSELVES too. We matter. We are worth caring for and about.

We don't often give ourselves the credit that we give to others. We don't cut US much slack either. When we are not PERFECT, we think the world is coming to an end. It is NOT. We are HUMAN and we need a little kindness and gentle caring too - especially from US. After all, if we don't think we count, why should anyone else treat us like we do?

What will you do in 2013 to remind yourself that YOU MATTER AND YOU ARE WORTHY OF LOVE??

It's a simple yet profound truth. We are made in God's image.
God is worthy to be LOVED.
Therefore, so are we.He made us to be the objects of His affection. Not HIS fault we don't feel worthy! We need a paradigm shift!
I know you'll have a successful journey - God bless you on the way!
