IF SPARKPEOPLE IS SO GREAT, WHY AM I NOT THIN?

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

There was a post on a thread recently that asked “Does anyone have a success story” and this intrigued me and I began to think about an answer. Even though when I start thinking a lot of things can go wrong, I will let you be the judge and jury after you read this blog.

What is it about SparkPeople that works so well for so many? Good question. I am sure that many have asked that question, especially those who have made an attempt to lose weight and improve their health with limited or no success. So why is SP successful for some and not others? Here are some of my thoughts.

SparkPeople is NOT a magic pill that will dissolve weight overnight. It is nothing more than a tool and any tool, not applied with diligence and commitment, is absolutely worthless. An expensive hammer makes not a carpenter.

You know it and I know it. We must work at it every hour of every day. That being said SP is one of those rare tools where one can consistently get more out of it that is put into it. That is synergism and it comes from the great support that each member gives to the others. That is what every other program/diet lacks as far as I know. I honestly believe that without these support systems that we have, maintenance is almost doomed to failure.

I have had incredible (at least for me) success with SparkPeople.

I have been on every diet imaginable and have had success in a few but NONE gave me the support system that is the hallmark of SP.

Many of you know my personal story but I believe it bears repeating here

In the early 80's, I weighed at least 335 lb.( that is the highest my scale would register) and I was a heart attack looking for a place to happen, Well, it did happen and I had my first bypass. Then in 1996 I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic and was put on the "Well let’s try this med and see what happens" roller coaster, and what a roller coaster it has been.

. I bounced between the high of 335 to a momentary low of 200 and was back to 235 in 2008 and had my second bypass in 2009. Through brute force, I “trimmed” down to 226 when I found SP in April 2011. Now I am proud to say that I am at 164 this morning and my A1c is 5.7 and I have now been declared diabetes free. Not cured mind you, just in total control! I am not taking any more meds for T2 but as a precaution, I test 3 times a day. Another benefit that I have achieved is that I have gone from 17 prescriptions a day to 3 and I attribute this to weight loss. It can't be from intense work outs as I am a lousy example of being in that category. Being 77, certain workouts are simply not in the realm of realization. Or is that I am rationalizing?

I have dropped from a very tight 54” pant (think Pillsbury dough boy) to a 34”

To me, the answer to my original question of why does SP work so well is, in a word, commitment. Like in a breakfast of bacon and eggs, “The chicken makes a contribution, but the pig is all in with total commitment”. I decided to let SP become an obsession, how about you?

So it boils down to "If it’s to be, it’s up to me" doesn't it? That is what works for me.

And yes, I am proud to be an evangelist for SP.

Have a great 2013 – ONWARD AND UPWARD.

I think you're absolutely right. The reason I've been successful this time around using SparkPeople when I've failed so many times in the past is because I've stayed connected to the process of healthy living every step of the way--even more so after I reached my weight loss goal (90+ pounds). SparkPeople is absolutely not a magic bullet, but it does provide an added dimension (actually, multiple dimensions) of support that make the process just a little bit easier.

If people are looking for inspiration, they can stop by the 'At Goal & Maintaining + Transition to Maintenance' team here on SparkPeople. We've got lots of active members who work really hard to stay engaged and maintain their healthy lifestyles. We've got tons of real-life role models!

Congratulations on all your success and Happy New Year!

You ARE definitely a success story and motivator! Having lost weight and maintained going on 2 yrs. for 100 lb. loss (some lost prior to joining SP) I couldn't agree more about 2 things that are critical to success: support and commitment. I definitely had to be commited for health reasons and positively found the support I needed and continue to need here on Spark. The thing I like to hope too is that I have also offered that support to others on the journey. THAT is what Spark People is all about.

Fantastic blog.

Wishing you and your wife a Happy New Year filled with blessings, abundance, happiness and health.

Yes - I chatter about SP all the time - and the epiphany moment for me was that I was getting out of the community what I was putting into it. The more I participated in my SparkTeams, the more I took a step out of my comfort zone and friended other Sparkers, the more tightly woven into SP I became.

I'm totally at peace knowing that I will have to track nutrition and water for the rest of my life. Even though my outside looks different because it's changing - I will always be an emotional overeater and I know given free reign it wouldn't be long before I would revert back to bad habits and so I track.

I don't care one iota about the "side eye" I get when I'm not at home and I use my digital scale and measuring spoons to measure my food - I'm only concerned about what's going on my plate - not anyone else's.

Firecom, thank you for such a thoughtful and inspirational post!

Great blog. SparkPeople has become an obsession for me, too. It's been the right tool to help keep me on track. At times I've been a bit embarrassed by how much time I spend on SparkPeople; but the time on SP has helped me focus on success and gain motivation. I love it, and I've been successful at losing weight and lowering my cholesterol. I still have a ways to go, but I'm now confident that I can do it, thanks to SparkPeople.

Wow! Great blog! It is true as we all know. We keep coming back because we have the commitment. I may not always get the workouts in, or I may not stay in my calorie range, but that's on ME not on Spark. I keep tracking and I know that sooner or later I will get there. I will say "no" to the candy I said "yes" to yesterday. I just need to keep trying.

Congrats on all you have accomplished!!

Terrific blog ! I too believe that a "hallmark" of why Spark People works is the support system. Losing weight is hard and keeping the weight off is even harder. That's where the Spark community comes in. The members support each other, which in turn helps every other member reach their goals.

Very well said. SparkPeople doesn't do the work - and that's where success comes from is us doing the work. SP is just a fantastic all-in-one tool that can meet our needs for a wide variety of tasks, having that little extra something we didn't even know we needed until we see that it is available.

You are exactly right, it's not a magical pill designed to poof the weight away overnight. SP will only work if you are willing to work too. I noticed at least for me when I try it works great, the support is here, you are held accountable for yourself. When I stop getting on here and don't use the support and tools given to me it's because I don't want to and I've fallen off the wagon. So success is what you make of it. Very inspiring story. Thanks for sharing.
