IF SPARKPEOPLE IS SO GREAT, WHY AM I NOT THIN?

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Monday, December 31, 2012

There was a post on a thread recently that asked “Does anyone have a success story” and this intrigued me and I began to think about an answer. Even though when I start thinking a lot of things can go wrong, I will let you be the judge and jury after you read this blog.

What is it about SparkPeople that works so well for so many? Good question. I am sure that many have asked that question, especially those who have made an attempt to lose weight and improve their health with limited or no success. So why is SP successful for some and not others? Here are some of my thoughts.

SparkPeople is NOT a magic pill that will dissolve weight overnight. It is nothing more than a tool and any tool, not applied with diligence and commitment, is absolutely worthless. An expensive hammer makes not a carpenter.

You know it and I know it. We must work at it every hour of every day. That being said SP is one of those rare tools where one can consistently get more out of it that is put into it. That is synergism and it comes from the great support that each member gives to the others. That is what every other program/diet lacks as far as I know. I honestly believe that without these support systems that we have, maintenance is almost doomed to failure.

I have had incredible (at least for me) success with SparkPeople.

I have been on every diet imaginable and have had success in a few but NONE gave me the support system that is the hallmark of SP.

Many of you know my personal story but I believe it bears repeating here

In the early 80's, I weighed at least 335 lb.( that is the highest my scale would register) and I was a heart attack looking for a place to happen, Well, it did happen and I had my first bypass. Then in 1996 I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic and was put on the "Well let’s try this med and see what happens" roller coaster, and what a roller coaster it has been.

. I bounced between the high of 335 to a momentary low of 200 and was back to 235 in 2008 and had my second bypass in 2009. Through brute force, I “trimmed” down to 226 when I found SP in April 2011. Now I am proud to say that I am at 164 this morning and my A1c is 5.7 and I have now been declared diabetes free. Not cured mind you, just in total control! I am not taking any more meds for T2 but as a precaution, I test 3 times a day. Another benefit that I have achieved is that I have gone from 17 prescriptions a day to 3 and I attribute this to weight loss. It can't be from intense work outs as I am a lousy example of being in that category. Being 77, certain workouts are simply not in the realm of realization. Or is that I am rationalizing?

I have dropped from a very tight 54” pant (think Pillsbury dough boy) to a 34”

To me, the answer to my original question of why does SP work so well is, in a word, commitment. Like in a breakfast of bacon and eggs, “The chicken makes a contribution, but the pig is all in with total commitment”. I decided to let SP become an obsession, how about you?

So it boils down to "If it’s to be, it’s up to me" doesn't it? That is what works for me.

And yes, I am proud to be an evangelist for SP.

Have a great 2013 – ONWARD AND UPWARD.

Enjoyed and was inspired by your blog. I had my first week with only one pound lost and, I have to admit, it really had me bummed. I felt I had lost more and had worked very hard and been consistent with the program. I have to keep reminding myself not to define my success by the number on the scale. Thank You for helping to pump me up during a low moment. emoticon

Yes, I cannot imagine how big I would be without Spark. I lost 65 pounds and then got busy and hardly spent much time on Spark and I have now gained back the 65 pounds plus 5. I am now getting back on track and I WILL ALWAYS WANT SPARK IN MY LIFE and all of my Spark friends.

Thank you for reminding me, that I need to stay on the stick.

Yes! I wholeheartedly agree. You will only ever get out of it what you put into it, especially with something like SP. What's unique too is how *much* you put into it. If you hardly do anything, it'll be harder to see & get results. If you're a so-so participant, you'll get some results but nothing really strong. And if you really take part in things, you'll definitely see results! Congrats on sticking through with things & going with the flow, & congrats on your accomplishments so far! :D

i like the tool analogy. people tend to want a magic pill and not realize all the work that is involved with reaching a goal and getting what you want in life.

I think it has to do with being in it together with others who share common goals. I have obsessed with SP somewhat as well but with worthwhile results. I'd say it is a healthy obsession!! Someone has said 'Misery loves company' but I think it is more like 'Success loves company'!! I know I do!! emoticon emoticon

Iliked very much your approach. It is a wonderful blog. My story is relatively similar to yours, but I have been making a fool of myself with ups and downs. I am once more trying it with SP and I believe it will work very good because tracking my foods is one of the safest way to continue on this road.
Congratulations.

I'm not thin because I don't eat right, don't exercise enough, got old in the process...you name it. But, Spark People has been a life-saver for me. I only weigh about 15 pounds less than when I joined a few years ago, but I'm down more than 150 pounds from my top weight. I think SP has been a HUGE help in that!

You said it! I am at all those borderlines of which you speak and have experienced. I still have the opportunity to turn my health around to NOT hit 300lbs, to NOT become diabetic, to NOT have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, and to NOT experience a heart attack. But, I am in the neighborhood, so commitment is the KEY!
Thank you for a great blog and a wake up call!!
Congratulations on your successes!

Sparkpeole is a tool for us to use. It can't be looking over our shoulders and telling us not to eat that. Or tell us to get up and get moving. Sparkpeople can only give us the guide and encouragement that we need. I have been on here before. I was not very involved any teams. This time I am going to use the tools that is provided. I know I can do better because I am more committed.

Thanks for your comments. They really hit home with me. I am 54 y.o. and have tried numerous times to loose weight. Now is worst than ever as menopause is having a ball with me. You have motivated me to keep going at it with commitment and with perseverance. Thank you once again... I am going to commit on a daily basis - to move, to eat right and to be healthy!!! emoticon

Same experience with SP for me! When I let myself go, I let SP go, too. Nutritional laziness is my problem because I feel I have little time to do anything for me. It seems easier to run around helping others than to sit down for 10 minutes and plan my own meals and fitness schedule for the week. Maybe staying busy is just an excuse so I don't have to take on the personal responsibility of caring for myself? Why is that? I'm the chicken... Thanks for the post!

Awesome blog. I have not lost very much since I joined here a couple of years ago but I can truly say it's has nothing to do with spark people. It's because I yo-yo so my weight yo-yo's. Another words not fully committed. I don't give up though because without the support I probably wouldn't keep of the little bit of weight I have lost. I probably would stop running after suffering injuries. I probably wouldn't get the emotional support I get when I feel emotional. So I won't give up on spark people because it's done more than help me lose a few pounds.

Clever, concise, and very well considered. IMO, you nailed it when you mention diligence. That concept applies to any significant life change. We all have setbacks and facing them is hard enough, but sharing them openly takes courage. And, staying on a program takes, well, diligence.

You also hit the nail on the head by cautioning that SP is not a magic pill. Only that the community and spirit here has worked for you. Thank you for sharing your journey, complete with failures as well as success here at SP.

Hip-Hip-Hooray for sticking with your own plan.
