Paleo Diet Day 47: Holiday Party

Today was cold and covered with a biting fog for much of the time. Perfect conditions for a small get-together of friends/colleagues, eight of us. It was a warm and relaxing couple of hours. Our hosts were aware of the various different diets going on in our family - gluten-free, wife on low-carb - and made a good-faith effort to accommodate. We brought a green salad (mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions, avocados, celery as ingredients with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing). The main dish was a chicken-based Indian-style curry with white rice. Appetizer was an artichoke dip with blue corn chips, and desserts included a GF cheesecake (our contribution), chocolate-peanut butter brownies, and a homemade pumpkin pie, with homemade whipped cream.

I decided to make this meal the 20% part of the Primal Blueprint's 80:20 rule. So I passed on the beer and had red wine instead (and later a glass of champagne) but did eat the corn chips with dip (fabulous), and had rice with the curry. I also had 1.5 pieces of brownie, and a slice of pumpkin pie. So I ingested some corn, rice, and wheat, but I hope/believe this will not throw me greatly off track as an isolated occurrence. Put positively, I felt comfortable making a conscious decision to eat as I did because I'm confident after 6.5 weeks of tracking my diet that I'm consistently following good dietary principles, and that I am getting the big issues fairly well in hand. emoticon

Of course if I wake up with raging GI issues tonight I'll have to review my approach. emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Rules are rules and exceptions are exceptions, and as long as we don't start to flip flop them and treat the exceptions as the new rules it all works out in the long run, no? I've decided to loosen up some of my rules during the last two weeks (not so much because of the holidays, but because of work stresses) and I'm ready to get back to stricter adherence this week. Hope my job cooperates!
