Pot Lucks, Pot Lucks Everywhere!

It seems that I am surrounded by pot lucks. Today the ladies had a pot luck. I'm invited to two more on New Year's Day. I'm getting the hang of coping, but it isn't easy to resist some of the goodies.

Today I took buffalo chicken meatballs [bought them in the freezer section] so that there would be some lean protein to eat. Glad I did. I skipped the casseroles and added celery sticks, a cracker and cube of cheese, salad and a banana to my plate. But I went back for dessert and got half of a large chocolate chip muffin. As I ate it, I kicked myself because there was also apple pie which would have been just as good and fewer calories.
Don't know what I'll take to New Year's Day yet. I have to think about what is likely to be missing in the healthy food department. Maybe carrot and celery sticks. I'm sure I'll be inspired before the day arrives. These really are a chore, but at least I don't take "a little bit of everything" any more. That's how I got to need Spark People. Now I pick and choose the healthy foods.

We can do this!

    Potlucks are tricky for sure. But sounds like you've developed a sensible way to approach them. Keep up the good work!

    Potlucks are difficult! I had one yesterday. As I couldn't stay til the end of the party, I took purchased hummus & pita chips. And that was most of what I ate, though I added some goat cheese & crackers. As a vegetarian at non-veg potlucks, sometimes my choices are limited!

    That is one of the toughest times for me too! All the food I used to LOVE right in front of me. It really does feel good to conquer your cravings and pick healthy choices. I was sooo busy at christmas, sat down to eat a meal with MIL and DH, was actually super surprised to see that I had presented an overall healthy meal to my loved ones, unconsciously, must be those great SP habits, sticking!!! WOO HOO!

    I always make/bring something that I love, that is low in cals and meets my nutrition needs. Like a huge salad, or fresh vegs and low fat dip, or fruit salad, or a brown rice and spinach casserole (from Diet for a Small Plantet).

    Thanks to you Beth..........I did well today. Actually this is the third time in a week I've had to make hard decisions. Hard decisions that I actually came out on top of.
    First time since Feb. 2012. Slow learner I guess. I just lived in fear of eating outside my home as the temptations were too great and up until now I've failed at pot luck or restaurants in general.
    Now I have the confidence to go out and mix with people knowing if I put thought into it...I can stick to this lifestyle to lose weight and then maintain one day.
    Thank you for sharing all of your restaurant stories with us. You inspire me!

    Yup, those potlucks keep calling our names. Sometimes it helps for me to say "Get thee behind me Satan!" quietly to myself. And it does help to call a spade a spade.

    The good thing is that you have pot lucks. I'm deployed and we've been getting a lot of candies, cookies and other baked goods. Not complaining as they are welcoming so I'm eating, as you stated, around the bad stuff for the healthy options. They are tempting an dit's interesting that we can recognize the difference and make the choice.
