Those Were the Days

Friday, December 28, 2012

Mary Hopkins recorded it in 1968 - per Wiki, it was translated from an old Russian romance song.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do

Chorus:

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

I LOVE that song...brings back so many good memories. I also realize now, that in 20 years, I'll look back on THIS time and think...Those were the days, my friend...

Such cute pics! I hadn't heard that song in a very long time and had forgotten about it. Great song as we wind down another year. Can't believe how fast it's flown by.

That was always one of my favorite songs. And while I enjoy reminiscing about those days gone by, I know I can never go back there. I can only go forward. But I can still be as thin, as healthy, as fit as I was then. That song was a hit when I was 21 years old and fresh out of college. Today I'm 65 and a far cry from what I was then. But I'm also a bit wiser and a whole lot happier. I was lonely then, but today I have my husband, my children and many friends. I was missing my college days when this song would play. I no longer miss those days--they were fun, but that time has passed. It's time to enjoy life NOW and to get myself thing, healthy and fit again NOW. Now is the only time we have--not the past or the future. Yes, it's a great song. But THESE are the days, my friend--TODAY. Best of luck to you on your journey to healthy living.
