I walk with a staff, a 55 inch hiking stick. The one I like when I'm walking Mutt is a sassafras staff 2 inches in diameter.
I had heard that if you hold the sides when you walk on a tread mill you burn up to 20% less calories. I figured that since I only used one staff I burnt 10% less. I wore a pedometer back then and decided to see what difference the staff made in my walking. With the staff i was doing 21,000 t0 24,000 steps a day. Without the staff I walked 6,000 steps. so the staff was worth it.
I just found out that I had it wrong, holding the sides on a tread mill does decrease the calories you burn, but walking with a staff increases the calories you burn. Not just because you walk more steps but because you swing your arm or arms if you use 2 staffs and if you are using a staff like mine that has weight to it it takes more to swing the staff.
