Christmas 2012

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

I spent the last two days with friends. We had a feast, snacks, and everyone opening presents. Everyone ws having a fun time, but the spirit of Christmas wasn't really there. The kids were ripping into presents like they couldn't handle not having more and more. And I got to thinking why nobody seems to know what the true meaning of Christmas is.

Christmas is not about getting presents and eating to stuff yourselves. It is not about how many cookies you can eat at a time (and one of the kids had 3 plates of cookies). Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of mankind. The greatest gift that we were given was the Son of God, the Word made life.

I know that I was participating in the fun and meal and treats just as much as the others. I need to remember that this is the celebration of Jesus' birth and not just what so many people say, that it is just a day for family and presents.

This year was very different for us. Family and friends dear to us had been suffering with health and personal issues since before Christmas, and it was really hard to get in the spirit this year. The Christmas tree wasn't brought in until the 21st, we had our family celebration on the 23rd, and my husband and I worked crazy schedules on the actual holidays. Money's been tight, so Santa brought a few less things for the kids.

But you know what? There were no meltdowns, no ripping through the paper, throwing one gift down to get to the next. We had a nice time, and then had a great meal of homemade macaroni and cheese. (The family plugged in one of the movies received for Christmas at this point, but I went and took a nap, in order to recover from working 3rd shift the night before.) Not the Christmas I had imagined, but it was nice.

~hugs~ Hang in there.

I was at my youngest daughters house for Christmas day and I thought it was so nice. My grand son had some holy water and he came around to us so we could make the sign of the cross with it and then he read three different prayers about Jesus and then his older brother read a couple of prayers also. I thought it was so beautiful then one by one they opened there presents taking their time and enjoying the family. Later in the day we Skype with my older daughter who is living in South Korea because her husband is in the Army stationed there and we opened presents with them. It was so nice being able to see my other grand children in south Korea open their presents from me that I sent them. And they opened presents that my youngest daughter sent to them also. It was a beautiful spiritual day. thank you Lord.

My family had fun reading the Christmas story, openings presents, watching a Christmas movie, and singing carols. Merry Christmas is best done with Him in mind.
