We knew what to do. Mom had brought the bag of groceries home from the store and....where are they?! Ah, here. The candy canes. My brother and I ran to the Christmas tree and began adding the hooked red & white sticks to the decoration around the evergreen tree. The scent of pine and peppermint mingled like a child's Christmas dream.
Later, when the sun was set, and the tree was lit, our house would settle down into a holiday flick on TV. First, we had to choose our candy cane from the tree because as we enjoyed the Christmas movie, we'd have a friendly competition: who can make the sharpest point on their candy cane? My dad was the judge and he endured the razor sharp pokes on his hand to agree, "yes that one is sharp!"
The tree of pine, the peppermint and traditions. Every year this thought brings back good memories because it's of family time together: which is ever sweeter than any candy.
What fine memories or traditions do you enjoy?
