Have My Cake and Eat It Too.!!

Thursday, December 20, 2012

No , not the whole cake,
This beautiful Spice cake has 555 calories per serving, It serves 16. 74 gr. carbs and 57 gr. of sugar. This cake is not welcome in my house. Unless there are enough people to eat it and then I would have only a small piece.

I celebrated my 71st birthday this week. I had cake , had no regrets, for it was a small square, less than 200 calories. But gave me the taste and satisfied my need to have cake for my birthday. It was chocolate with a coffee, mocha cream filling, and chocolate butter cream frosting. Since it was a small piece I could even have a small scoop of ice cream. Satisfaction !!. There was no moaning and groaning that I over ate and felt terrible about it later.

I would rather eat a small amount of real food than all the other stuff that passes it's self off as low calorie ,healthy alternatives.
Many times I have tried some of the food that is 100 calories and says it will give you the satisfaction of a brownie, cookie, or candy. But it's usually loaded with something else to make up for less fat and it's dry and tasteless. You eat it and then end up eating the real thing anyway. Usually by that time over eating.
I prefer to have the real food, just a small portion .
In tests they have determined that only 2,3 bites of a food , satisfies a craving. You just have to know when to stop eating. I usually try to share or I portion a food out and freeze the rest or save for another day.
OK. , you might say but I can't do that. If I have a certain food around I will keep eating it till it's gone. Then you are not to the point that you have any control over your cravings. Give it time. You have to reach a point that food is not in control. You want health and fitness, over the taste of some food.

We are faced with choices everyday. Since this healthy fitness journey is still relative new to me, the choice of foods is still high on my list. But I realize that everyday that passes I get more comfortable with my life and my choices. My life is becoming the one that's normal.
I am at a normal weight, consider what I eat to be normal. So when someone says to me they want to get to the point that they don''t have to watch calories and food choices all the time and eat normal, I am baffled. Do you consider the people that stuff themselves and over eat the normal ones??
Not me!!!!. If eating pizza once a week, or drinking a six pack or consuming a tub of popcorn at the moves, and all the cookies, candy, ice cream you want, and being over weight and out of shape is normal, I will pass. Thank you very much!!

I make good choices 98% of the time. Will I get to 100%? I don't know.
I do know I don't deprive myself. If I want cake or a cookie, donut, candy, champagne, I plan it in my daily meals and still can stay in control of my calories. Now I don't expect to have these foods every day. But doing your best to live a healthy life does not mean you have to deprive yourself of every food pleasure . Set your limits, use portion control and enjoy life.

I had a party to go to last week. I made treat gift bags . Baked over 180 cookies.
I ate 4 cookies. There were four different kinds and I had to do quality control on each one. Smile!!
I then set up an assembly to put the bags together. Here's some pictures. Oh I also had bags of candy , four different kinds, But I didn't need to taste the candy, I bought it, no testing needed.

I put 4 pieces of candy in the plastic bags. Wrapped each cookies in plastic wrap the put then in the gift bags I made and tied them with ribbon.

I took the Xmas trees I use at my Xmas gift shows and used them for the party. One was a present table the other a dessert table with cake and cookies. Also had ice cream with topping so people could make their own sundaes. I went early on party day to make sure everything was set up and put the gift bags at each place. The dinner turned out real nice.
As a group we sponsored a family for Xmas. Bought the toys, gift cards, collected food and certificate to buy a Xmas dinner at a local market. All in all the family got $450. .00 for their Xmas.

Since we would rather help out a needy family than buy for each other we have limited out present giving to one small theme item, this year it was a scarf.
Some years it's a piece of Xmas jewelry, or a ornament.
I didn't know who would be choosing my scarf so I took an selection for the person to choose from. I knit and crochet so here are some of my items I made and took, plus some I recently sold at my gift shows. The knitted head bands are very popular this year. I can't keep enough on hand. Still getting orders.
The one that Ellen chose at the party was the lacy dark burgundy red scarf and hat.
I have one for myself. I was wearing it today and someone asked me where I got it. I told her I made it and she wanted to know if I sell any. Almost everyday I go out I wear a head band or hat and scarf and I get asked about them. Nothing like promoting your product. Smile!!

Today I went to Value Village. Felt like I needed to go. I had stopped Monday but didn't find anything, I wasn't in the mood to shop.
Today I made out like a bandit.
The items that are on 50% off , get changed to a new color tag on Thursday. All the previous 50% off items for one day, Thursday sell for $2.00. They could have any regular price. It's really a day you can make some great buys.
I bought a lovely purple snow parka, name brand, marked $24.99, had been 50% off, but since it didn't sell, today I got it for$2.00. I got 2, nice sweatshirts, one was $12.99, the other $7.99. each $2.00. Two knit tops,$ 2.00 each. Another great buy was a pair of ski poles, that I use for nordic walking , reg. priced $14.99, for $2.00.
Value Village prices of $70.94, I paid $10.00 for. Since it was my birthday I got one item free. Can I shop or not???
Well my dear Spark friends I hope you are all enjoying the festive holiday season. I know there has been tragedy in our wonderful land, but we can't let that sick twisted individual destroy our lives. We will pray for the families and speak out if we feel something more should be done to control the violence.

May you keep making the good choices, be strong, stay positive.

Peace and Love Tisha

Wow, Tisha, where do I begin! #1. You are a very talented lady...from the cookie gift bags, to all your beautiful hand-made scarves and hats, to your AMAZING shopping finds. Damn, girl...I thought I was a good shopper. Pales in comparison to you!!!
2#. LOVE your talk about eating real food and not depriving yourself. I made individual creme brulee cups for Christmas dinner dessert--one for each person. Enjoyed EVERY bite (they were about 6oz ramekin size) and when it was gone, that was IT. No week-long leftovers of cakes, pies, or cookies to worry about avoiding. #3. Love that one of your pics says, " Nothing tastes as good as HEALTHY feels." That similar 'skinny' saying bugs me. Wasted way too many years focusing on 'skinny' instead of 'strong & healthy'. Now that I have shifted focus to the latter I feel better than I ever have. If that is a result of maturity, I'll take it. Which brings me to the fact that I cannot believe that you are 71!?! All I can say is looking at you and reading through all your words-o-wisdom truly inspires me!
Finally, that was a beautiful 'Field Trip' poem you shared. As a teacher and mother, that is exactly how I choose to think of those lost souls. And, you are right.--we cannot let what happened destroy our lives or spirit because that allows 'evil' to win. The outpouring of love for these families shows that there is still MUCH good in the world.

Wishing you a blessed holiday season & much continued success in the New Year! emoticon

Sounds Like you had a happy Birthday and your Christmas Party sounds like lots of fun. You are very talented with your hands, always making something beautiful with them be it Jewelry or knitted items. I totally agree that our eating healthy is a lifestyle and there is no way we can go back to the way we ate before otherwise all our efforts at losing weight and being healthy will be undone fast. Wishing you and Yours a very Merry Christmas and the most Wonderful year in 2013. I know you've been very good so Santa will be visiting you this year--LOL! Keep inspiring us my friend. You are so awesome and inspire me to be as healthy as possible. I've made progress this year but will be making big strides in 2013. Take good care.

    Love & Hugs,

Tisha, YOU are a very talented young woman! Your scarf sets are beautiful with a wonderful assortment and I love the headbands. Your cookies look delicious and I am glad they are not in my house. I am still working on the 2-3 bite rule which is why I don't buy certain foods right now although at my son-in-law's birthday I took a 3 inch by 3 inch ice cream cake and my son-in-law said to me I know you want a small piece so that made me feel good. Tisha, you are just the best bargain shopper that I know.
Your deals sound wonderful especially the parkas. I assume Value Village is not a chain store. Your buys sound just great at $2.00 a piece. Thank you for sharing the poem about the angels. Enjoy your holidays! Hugs, June
