I went to a step class at my gym a few months back - a class that was new to me. I'm pretty familiar with step workouts, though, through home DVDs. I was a bit embarrassed (but flattered) when the teacher said in front of the whole class "wow, you look like you know your way around a step!" That was a nice affirmation...
...that faded quickly when she finished up a routine and said "okay, everybody go grab a hoop!" Huh...wha?
I knew they offered hula hooping classes at the gym as well, but had not even entertained the idea of going to one, nope, not for a second. I was never a good hula hooper when I was young, and any attempts to try it again as an adult were hilarious, but utter failures.
So here I was, in a class with a bunch of other people, and there was no way to gracefully make an exit before making a complete ass out of myself. So I got a hoop and prepared to be humbled.
Bless the instructor, she was SO patient with this awkward beginner. While the other (talented) ladies went through a regular routine, I buckled down and gave it my best. It took a while, and a LOT of bending over and picking up! but eventually I actually got that puppy going. Not for a long time, but consistently enough to know I was "getting it". It was more of a workout than I thought it would be! And, though I haven't been back, I did feel a nice sense of accomplishment, both because I tried something I was sure I would suck at, and then that I didn't totally suck!
So for my birthday last month, I asked for a hula hoop :-) And DH got one for me. It even lights up as you twirl it! Well, I'm right back where I started, bending over and picking up, but I rented a DVD from the library and tonight's workout is going to be Hula Hoopin'!
Old dog, new tricks? Perhaps, but I'm having fun with it!
