My cure for the common cold; check it out

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Yeah, I wish I had one.
But I was hoping to get everyone's personal views on what has worked for them.

My DH has been sick for the last 4 days and now, this morning I woke with a sore throat. Not good timing so close to the holidays and with so much to do.

I had a flu shot, so I have eliminated that possiblility.

Some say take a lot of vitamin C. I always try to get my information from reliable sources and I often go to Here is what they say about vitamin C, it's good reading.

The jury is still out on C as a preventative to colds and you can overdose on C , one needs to be careful.

I did take 2 of the Emergen-C 1,000mg Vitamin C packetsl. I have this recipe that tastes pretty good and I figure it can't hurt.. I don't normally take C supplements.

Here is a link to my "vitamin C morning breezer"

Sore throat, sore throat please go away...
And none of your friends are invited to stay...

Oh Donna! I know! My husband was terribly sick during all the funeral planning and funeral and still and of course I got it! Mine is not as severe. I heard alot of good things about elderberry from another Firecracker. Hot tea helped with my throat, but that part didn't last long until it was all in my nose and sinuses! Hot food does help. Hope you are well again now, and if not, soon!

Elderberry lozenges or syrup seems to help. I have been taking extra vitamin C and coconut oil for it's anti viral effects. I hope it is not the flu for either of you. I was sick for two weeks at the beginning of the month with it and I caught it from my mom who was sick for a week. She had a flu shot and so it was shorter for her but still nasty. I have a friend who swears by coconut oil and golden seal for a shorter cold.

Plenty of fluids and plenty of rest but the 2 of them together are hard to achieve - you get to sleep and then have to get up to the bathroom. Last Christmas I was sick with bronchitis and slept most of Christmas day. So far this year I am feeling well. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I take zinc lozenges - there's a brand called Cold-Eeze that you can get at most drug stores, and you're supposed to take it within 24-48 hours of feeling the first symptoms. It does taste a little metallic, but I really think it stopped a cold from hitting me a couple weeks ago. And of course, lots of sleep is always good.

Get well and stay well!

I've been sick since last Wednesday and finally today am feeling like I'm back in the land of the living. I've been drinking tea with lemon and honey for my throat and just because it feels nice.

I was prescribed Tussin to help my cough, and Urgent Care also gave me a script for amoxicillin. I'm taking it even though if it's just a viral thing, it won't really help. The over the counter drugs that have helped me somewhat are Alka Seltzer. I had heavy congestion and their "mucus and congestion" formulation helped a bit.

Trying to drink lots of fluids and suck on a million cough drops.

hope you feel better.

When I get all stuffy (too stuffy for my Neti to work well) I clear my sinuses by eating spicy foods. It makes my nose run, then I can use the Neti pot. Lots of honey for the sore throat - preferably in tea

I have had a cold the past few days. I'm using my Neti Pot twice a day. It helps to keep my sinuses draining instead of stuffy, so I feel better. I haven't had a sore throat or a fever, thank goodness, so I've been able to exercise. I felt better after my spin class. I think the sweating was good for me. I don't take cold medicines or decongestants, but I do take one Advil two or three times a day. I drink lots of liquids, too. Hot tea feels good.

I've been told by many a pharmecist and through Nutrition that vitamin C does nohing really for the common cold. I myself will take fresh ginger, grate it and soak it in hot water (tea) with lemon and honey. It seems to help the tummy, throat, and even the sinuses a little. I personally swear by it. Many people can't get past the taste of ginger though or the texture. Maybe put the ginger in a little bag to soak or something.

Eccanesia (I know I spelled that wrong) tea is also supposed to help.
