Crafty Christmas Tradition

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Arts & crafts have always been on my hobby-list. When my kids were small, every single ornament on the Christmas Tree was hand-made. Now my daughters are in their thirties and one of them has TWO children! So I've started a crafty holiday tradition with them.

Each year, sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I get a tracing of my grandkids' handprints. Then I make them a Christmas Tree ornament the size of their hands. Since Hunter was just born this year, he'll be getting his first ornament this year. Stella, on the other hand, just turned four, so she'll be getting her fifth!

Here's a photo my daughter took of Stella's four ornaments last year at Christmas-time:

This year, I had to pick a new color, as I want each year to have a different color ornament! Green is out, since it won't show up well against a green tree. This year, I went with orange! Here is a photo of the ornaments I just finished:

Stella's hand is getting so big, at four years of age. :D Hunter's hand at almost 5 months old is much bigger than Stella's first hand was, at her first Christmas. We had traced her hand at the family Thanksgiving party, so she was only two weeks old!

I love and enjoy this crafty Christmas tradition and hope that, perhaps, I've given some of you an idea for your own crafty tradition.

What a great ideas! What are the "hands" made from? I don't have children but I think this is one of the nicest things I've seen.

Cute idea! I used to to craft projects but I seem to have lost my creativity. Also, my daughter-in-law has a degree in fine arts. She is a very talented artist. One Christmas we got some model magic for my niece. We all sat in the kitchen with my niece and played. My niece made a great big butterfly. I made roses. My son made little claymation-type men. My daughter-in-law made four snow people, one a miniature snow woman wearing a hat with a flower on it and an apron with a ruffled pocket. It was exquisite. I am very happy to let her do the craft stuff! I am also very lucky to have the most wonderful daughter-in-law in the whole world. Just saying, so you don't think I'm complaining, because I'm not! I really am in awe of her talent.
