Holiday Stress

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

For the first week of our winter challenge, we are to give 3 suggestions on how to deal with holiday stress. Stress is an everyday part of our lives, and I truly envy people who can handle it gracefully. I stress out on the job, and tend to bring it home. And it's especially bad around the holidays. This week as well, the country is dealing with the tragedy at Newtown, CT. My prayers & heartfelt sympathy go out to those affected by it.

So, I've been trying to think of 3 things that I can use to lessen stress. The first is just to remember to breathe. I have been working with qi gong dvds which emphasize deep breathing and slow movements - it has been likened to a moving meditation. This has helped & the more I do the exercises, the calmer I become. When my shoulders start to move up to my ears, I take a few deep breaths & start to relax. The 2nd idea for me is to eat healthier. This is the time of sugar overload, and that causes me to become hyper & more nervous. Emotional eating is rampant this time of year, so I have to bring more fruits & veggies to the table. My 3rd suggestion is to develop an "attitude of gratitude". Be thankful for what is in my life; don't dwell on what I don't have or what I can't do. Enjoy the holiday lights, play with my cats, and don't feel that everything has to be perfect.

The attitude of gratitued is a good one. When we count our blessings we can truly see how we're richly blessed. I'm also letting go of the perfection thing. At the rate I'm going my Christmas cards may end up being New Years cards but that's okay.

We all have lots to be thankful for, and sometimes we forget about the simplest things, life itself! Keep shinning bright diamond girl!
