Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as a free dinner. I attended a monthly late-afternoon get together for department chairs which features hearty appetizers and beverages, paid for by a thoughtful administrator. I arrived close to 5 pm so I decided I'd partake of both the working conversation - sharing challenges and experiences, mostly -- and the food. I ate a dozen+ of those chicken skewers, plus some raw veggies (carrots, cauliflower, broccoli), and two glasses of wine. Hey, work is intense these days.
Afterward there was a saxaphone quartet at our co-op playing Christmas tunes. Never heard a sax quartet before, not too bad, and a pleasant way to unwind. Nice to know I'm getting well known enough at the coffee/tea bar that the barrista there now shows me her latest new tea when I walk up to the counter (tonight was an herbal peach tea, very relaxing and smooth). I guess it's the earnest informed consumer's equivalent of the neighborhood pub, like "Cheers" of former TV fame.
