Today I am eating lunch in the work canteen when a colleague I haven't seen for a couple of months comes in.

She more or less pounces. 'Wow, you look thinner. I wasn't sure it was you!'

She has an ongoing struggle with her own weight, so of course she wants to know how I've done it.

Difficult. I mean, what do you say? I told her about SP but I also say there's no magic wand. The SP principle is you count calories in, you exercise plenty of calories out, you don't eat things you know perfectly well you shouldn't. End of.

Only, it's not quite is it? I tried to explain that in fact SP is a whole community and she says 'Like Weighwatchers?' and I say 'nooooooo!' The big difference with SP is the amount you get to contribute yourself. The more you put in, the more you get out. That's why I blog, why I'm a Community Team member, why I look after the UK London and Southeast team. It's a whole lifestyle thing. The more you belong, the more positive the effect on you.

Surprisingly hard to describe it to someone who hasn't tried it.

Will send her a link to SP in a couple of days' time.

I have been getting the same question from people I work with, even my District Manager asked me. I explain the trackers, but its hard to really put it into words. Its not like any diet I have ever done because its not a diet, its a lifestyle change. The best thing to do is give them the link and them let check it ou for themselves. Once I started seeing the results, I know that it pushed me to put even more effort in. Even those times when I'm not seeing results and want to be discouraged, there seems to always be something on SP that motivates me to keep going.

It really is hard to explain. It is a whole lifestyle thing, isn't it? I came to SP just to use the food tracker and little by little I was drawn in. How do you explain it? Do you say you just need to take one step, because that can lead to two steps?

This is the place where you can...
...find a soft place to land
...change your life and start living again
...find understanding and support and good friends and great advice
...give as much as you want and get so much more in return
...laugh and cry and share and learn

You are so right! I hope she will take advantage of the link. I do not even remember how I found Sparkpeople, it had to have been on the Internet as none of my friends knew about it. There is just so much more than weight loss, an example is you, I would have missed out on you and your blogs so I would have had fewer blessings. You are a blessing! emoticon

I'm amazed how many people I talk to who are looking for a magic bullet. And they are dissapointed when the simple explaination comes forward. Good response.

Great explanation of SP and the responsibility you have for yourself. It's so obvious on SP with the trackers whether you are working or skating. Oh, I wish there was a magic wand I could wave, but there isn't soooooo, it's just work and sometimes a lot of fun with the SP community.

Great response!

I always feel responsible for the other team members, not just for myself. It makes a lot of difference. It doesn't always keep me on the straight and narrow, but it helps me get back on when I've lost my way.

It can be hard to explain, but it works! And the best part for me is no negative backlash (like ww :-( been there, not for me ever again) just wonderful supportive people. Like you! Have a wonderful weekend!

I enjoy the positive responses from my Spark Friends when i am having a hard time. I lose so slowly that I do get a bit frustrated sometimes. They have helped to keep me going. emoticon
Hard to explain until you actually try it.
