Today I am eating lunch in the work canteen when a colleague I haven't seen for a couple of months comes in.

She more or less pounces. 'Wow, you look thinner. I wasn't sure it was you!'

She has an ongoing struggle with her own weight, so of course she wants to know how I've done it.

Difficult. I mean, what do you say? I told her about SP but I also say there's no magic wand. The SP principle is you count calories in, you exercise plenty of calories out, you don't eat things you know perfectly well you shouldn't. End of.

Only, it's not quite is it? I tried to explain that in fact SP is a whole community and she says 'Like Weighwatchers?' and I say 'nooooooo!' The big difference with SP is the amount you get to contribute yourself. The more you put in, the more you get out. That's why I blog, why I'm a Community Team member, why I look after the UK London and Southeast team. It's a whole lifestyle thing. The more you belong, the more positive the effect on you.

Surprisingly hard to describe it to someone who hasn't tried it.

Will send her a link to SP in a couple of days' time.

I tell even skinny friends who maybe want to increase their exercise time or cook better for their kids. I think SP has something for literally everyone!

Hard to explain to people. I always make sue to tell them, this is not a diet. I can not go back to eating and not exercising if I want to keep off what I have removed.

I try to tell people it is not what you take in but what you leave out and the food you eat should be low cal. My ex would always ask what I was eating and I'd say it's what I'm not eating.

Great way of explaining the program. There's no shortcut to real success - if there was one, the weight would come right back just after you declared "success."

  Thanks for a great blog.

I've had similar but a little different experiences when I traveled out-of-County recently. I too saw folks that I'd not seen in quite awhile.

One of the first thoughts/comments thrown each time is that I must be on some new and terribly effective "diet". Had no one, not anyone, not a single person that could or would follow and believe me when I informed them that my base or daily caloric intake surpasses tremendously that of any other period of my life.

Nor would they, nor could they grasp the notion that most all "positive" results, all the disappearing fat was a matter of increasing the energy output!

I know that it is quite a "leap of faith" to put much of any belief to the notion of increasing intake with the expectation of burning off the excess fat. I picture it a bit like cooking (or "burning body fat" ) . . . one needs fuel to stoke the process.

Happy Holidays to you and best wishes for continued successes and continuing sagas shared with us. Thank you sincerely!

You are so right. But people just want that magic bullet to lose weight, they do not want to do all the work. But the longer that I am on this site the better I do. You must be doing a great job, glad she noticed.

I think you put your finger on it: "The more you put in, the more you get out." So true about Spark... it's like ongoing immediate online support... there's such a world wide community of like-minded folks that it's hard NOT to get a response when you post something!

I point people here, too... for some of us, the community IS the key element that was missing in past efforts. We wear our real life friends out with our blind alleys and second starts (and third, and fifteenth)... but here, folks "get it", and are succeeding! Long term! And remembering why it's important... and supporting each other, ONE step, ONE decision at a time...

am I bubbling? You bet. I'll stop now. You're part of the choir! emoticon

Yep, I've found as I've let myself drift from the site over the past few weeks my inclination to exercise and be more mindful about what I'm eating has also started to disappear. Need to make more of an effort to re-engage.

"The more you put in, the more you get out" That is so true! I noticed that if I don't engage with SP, I start to lose focus: I stop counting calories, I stop tracking workouts, and then my accountability goes out the window, so I begin to make bad choices.

Keep up the great work everyone!
