Today I am eating lunch in the work canteen when a colleague I haven't seen for a couple of months comes in.

She more or less pounces. 'Wow, you look thinner. I wasn't sure it was you!'

She has an ongoing struggle with her own weight, so of course she wants to know how I've done it.

Difficult. I mean, what do you say? I told her about SP but I also say there's no magic wand. The SP principle is you count calories in, you exercise plenty of calories out, you don't eat things you know perfectly well you shouldn't. End of.

Only, it's not quite is it? I tried to explain that in fact SP is a whole community and she says 'Like Weighwatchers?' and I say 'nooooooo!' The big difference with SP is the amount you get to contribute yourself. The more you put in, the more you get out. That's why I blog, why I'm a Community Team member, why I look after the UK London and Southeast team. It's a whole lifestyle thing. The more you belong, the more positive the effect on you.

Surprisingly hard to describe it to someone who hasn't tried it.

Will send her a link to SP in a couple of days' time.

So TOTALLY my reaction to SparkPeople, too. I could track elsewhere. I could accomplish the same physical results. But there's just something more. A ... Spark perhaps. When we reach out and start to belong, we share the journey, we have a combined knowledge base instead of any one person needing to remember everything.

Though you're right about the difficulty "to describe it to someone who hasn't tried it" your description of SP is the best - concise and essential.

I certainly agree with you!! Without the community support, it would be just like any other weight loss (diet) program! We are the lucky ones to have the kind of support we find here!!! People just can't grasp it until they join in on the fun!!

Yep, been trying to explain it to my family (outside my house) and they just don't get it. Most don't want to spend the time on it. Just want to go about being the way they are whether happy or not.

You can give your friend the link, but if they aren't ready to do what they need to do...........

SP is a great support site for losing weight and learning to make healthier decisions but if I wasn't ready to change the way I thought about losing weight and myself, SP wouldn't have helped me.
When your friend is ready, you'll be there ready to help.

Have a great day,

Karen

I totally agree. People seem skeptical of the wonderful relationships I have formed with on-line Spark friends from all over the world. Not only do we support each other, but it has enhanced my world view and caring about what happens in New Zealand and Norway etc.

(I lost 50 pounds over the past year)

Congrats on your success and have a very Merry Christmas!

Different things work for different people but one thing I noticed long ago was that many of the people who lost weight and kept it off successfully became weight loss gurus--the lady who started Weight Watchers, Richard Simmons, Jenny Craig, Susan Powder. I think that helping others keeps us focused on maintaining our healthy habits because we want to continue to be part of the solution.

Remember when the healthy lifestyle seems hard or "life happens" that sticking with SP in the one thing we need to do. We need one another.

You are so right on the mark. It's all about how much you put into the site and share. I get most of my motivation just speaking and responding to people and sharing what little I know. That's how we all learn and keep on track. Congrats on the continued healthy lifestyle!

GIRLINMOTION 12/13/2012 9:44AM

Yes, you can lead the person to SparkPeople, but having them do the work is another. They still want a magic wand.

I tell everyone I know who is trying to loose weight (unsuccessfully) and if they do they talk about the work (tracking and such). I have to say isn't your health worth the time?
