Desert Hiking

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Last weekend's hike destination was Mecca Hills and Painted Canyon. Location about 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the Colorado Desert, just north of the Salton Sea.

From Wikepedia:
"...narrow steep-walled canyons winding and creating a natural maze within the badlands. Uniquely faulted and folded geologic formations are the result of the San Andreas Fault, making the Mecca Hills one of the more unusual geological sites of this kind."

Amazing landscape.

The beginning of this hike leads through very narrow canyons

Up and down some crazy ladders

Out of the wash with beautiful desert views

The Salton Sea in the distance

Back down into the wash through Painted Canyon.

Past a smoke tree

How small we are!

In all honesty, while the scenery was amazing, some of the ladder climbing and rock scrambling was a bit too dicey. I'm a little chicken sh!t when it comes to heights.

Great pictures of what seems like a great area to hike. I've hiked other locations in the general area but not that one - hmmm, not sure I would like the ladders, either, and some rock climbing scares me, too - it's not just being chicken, I'm old enough that a fall would do a lot more damage than it would have years ago and I'm not eager to be crippled for life so the stakes and risk outweigh the benefits of stuff like that as far as I'm concerned. Good for you for doing ing tho!!

What a beautiful place! I like deserts. That is some very rough country. Doing the hike this time of year is a lot better than July! Heights actually scare me! But I like being on the being on the edge. What a fun outing.

The desert views are gorgeous, indeed. But I'm with you there on the height thing.

Terrific views. I was in the Painted Desert one trip. Is that where the Painted Canyon is located? -- Lou

what a beautiful sight . just to look at the pictures makes you want to be with you . Is this the same area that the young man went alone and get stuck in the rocks and had to take his own arm off ?

From the other climbs and altitudes you've hit, how can you say you worry about heights? This is some amazing geology! Glorious pictures, too.
