Whale watching – pics!!

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

I have been asked a few times about our local whale watching – I have some pictures for you.
Every year the humpback whales come to rest and play in the calm relatively shallow, warm blue waters of Hervey Bay - they bring their calves as well and can be seen easily on whale watching tours. They are in the Bay from June to November each year and each year there are more – or they seem to be more as they lose their fear of man.
They are very inquisitive and often come right up to the boats. They are huge and make us realize just how insignificant we are., Yet despite their size I have never heard of an accident with a whale overturning a boat - though occasionally whales get hit by boats.
I took these photos in 1987 –on a whale watch trip –
Yes the whales are real – and the photos aren’t post cards – they were taken with a normal camera by me - no telephoto lens – just “happy snaps” and the whales truly do come this close.

I love whale watching! I've been on 3, all from Boston Harbor. Only one of the times did I see any whales but it was magnificent! Yes, you feel so insignificant. I am going to add whale watching to my list of things I want to do as I lose weight. Right now it would be hard for me (not impossible but extremely difficult) so something to look forward to!

emoticon My Son very reluctantly went on a Whale Watching Trip back in 2004 off San Juan Island, Washington. He was so impressed by them that he still talks about that Trip often. Partly because of his enthusiasm Whale Watching is now on My Bucket List!!
emoticon Your pictures look as Fabulous as his Stories of that Trip sound!! Maybe I should edit My Bucket List to Whale Watching in Australia!!

Awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. I have never seen a whale, other than on tv. This seems like a wonderful opportunity.

My parents took me on a whale watching trip back in the early 80's when I was only 12 or 13. What an amazing experience! We went off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Even as a child I knew it wasn't safe for the whales to be so fearless. Not for our safety but for theirs!

They are so big. I bet that can be nerve wracking in the boats sometimes.

It is so exhilerating to witness creatures such as this. What a treasure. I went to Florida's Key West 3 years ago and twice got to see huge turtle swimming along side the boat. I loved it.
