well--all my Christmas baking is done. it took two days--rob helped on Sunday and yesterday i did the last two batches. as usual, i overdid things a bit--so there will cookies aplenty to go around.
i always bake for our vet clinic--they are so important to us and we appreciate them so much. so i make snacks for them each year. its really the only time of year that i bake anymore and i love to bake, so its always an excuse to go all out.
this year i decided to try all new recipes, so it was especially enjoyable to be a little adventurous. i did resurrect one recipe from many years ago--a date cookie--because i happened upon a very good buy on dates. but i made some kind of scrabble type mix with pretzels and peanuts and butterscotch chips (for the sweet/salt crowd) a mint brownie that i decided did NOT need the chocolate frosting it was supposed to have (talk about rich), a wonderful apple crumble cookie with caramel sauce, thumbprints with nutella filling, some kind of fudge with crumbled oreos in it that should just be illegal--i think it contained every form of sugar on the planet--that is one recipe i won't make again--far too sweet--and a very nice orange marmalade cookie that is more like a small orange scone. that was one recipe i should have read over before i started and made half the recipe--the amount of fat it called for was only 1/2 cup, and the sugar was pretty low, so i thought it would make a small batch--until i came to the part that called for FOUR CUPS of flour! needless to say, i have a lot of these in reserve, and they will be going various places for some time now. i am not sure what to do with the oreo fudge, unless some of the "sweet" addicts at his work like it--i really don't even like to send something that unhealthy along even as a treat for them. my normal MO is to give stuff like that to the chickens, but i can't give them this stuff!
but my baking self is good and tired of the whole thing, so i got my groove on and worked it until it ran its course. next on the horizon is the hors douvres party we are having here on the 18th--but that's a carry in, so i don't have much to make. mostly i have to just clean and decorate the house. hoping i can find red amaryllis for the mantle--i am doing to do cardinals in the living room, and the usual snowmen in the dining room along with rob's train. think the bedroom will be snowmen too.
we will be having some kind of "dirty bingo" game or something--friend rosie is in charge of that--and a film festival in three rooms. we are screening "le belle et la bete" , "Christmas in Connecticut" and "Santa Claus conquers the martians". hopefully it will be fun. our house is kind of small, so hopefully everyone will "fit" and have a good time. i haven't even begun to think about what--if anything--we will do on Christmas day. will cross that bridge later.
my friend sherri loaned me a couple new leslie dvds--tried one of them yesterday. its a 3 mile, which is less than i usually do, but the center mile is paced so you can jog for the entire 14 minutes, which was nice. today is the third repetition of week NINE of podrunner--then its on to the tenth and last week, and a continuous 50 minutes of running--WOO HOO!!!! i can't recommend these interval workouts highly enough. they are based on the swiss idea (i think its swiss) of "fartlek" which means a slow, easy training that gets you up to a good endurance run without injury. it has worked really well and i am so pleased that i am nearly there.
late breakfast with my girlfriends this morning--time to get up and about my morning. have a lovely day, everyone!
