Moving hurts

Monday, December 10, 2012

So true...

I renewed my lease with my roommate, so I'm in my apartment for another year...don't have to worry about moving myself until 2014! YAY!!!

But it's been a big three years in moving for my family!!

April 2009, my parent's basement flooded. And not the good kind of flooded, where some rainwater seeps in through an open window or a leaky foundation. The kind of flooded that hit every house in my parent's neighborhood, involves raw sewage backing up in a heavy storm and standing almost a foot deep for almost two days before the plumbers (and FEMA) got in to assess the damage.

Carrying those couches out of their basement family room afterward was the WORST moving experience to date, let me tell ya!

Then, my brother went through a moving phase. Moved him from Lafayette to Penn State in September 2010, from Penn State to San Francisco in June 2011, then from San Francisco to Charleston (SC) in April 2012.

He hates me. There's no other explanation.

So when I renewed my lease, I was so excited that I wouldn't have to move anything again for another year and a half!

After the flooding, my parents had to tear out the floors, the walls, the plumbing, and dig down a few feet to put in a sump pump to prevent future flooding. They've managed to get the plumbing fixed, put in new walls, and put together a bathroom and laundry room.

And now, they're aiming to finish it before Christmas. So I spent Sunday hauling equipment and other stuff out of their basement. And I've already promised to go back this weekend....I'll sand down the walls, paint everything, and then move in furniture the weekend right before Christmas.

D'OH!! emoticon

It's great exercise, and I do WANT to help them. My dad's issues with the bone spur and spinal stenosis, and my mom's mild scoliosis, make me prefer to do it myself rather than have them try to do it and possibly really hurt themselves!

But they painted the bathroom bright orange. And the study is yellow and red. And the basement color they picked is purple. PURPLE!!

It hurts me all the way to the bone! Moving heavy boxes and filing cabinets might have left the mild ache in my arms, but it's the colors they picked that really hurt me!

And it's not really what I want to do with my vacation (I'm off December 21 until January 2), so I'm going to get as much done before then as I can.

But after helping with all of this, watching how hard it is....SOOO GLAD I'm not moving until fall 2014 at the earliest!!

I AM looking forward to the calories burned this weekend! How many calories do you think painting burns?! I've got three rooms (36X13, 12X18, and the god-awful orange bathroom) to sand and paint...hoping that will burn at least 1000 cals!!

Not sure how many calories you burn painting rooms but I would bet it is probably a pretty good amount! Doing all that fixing up is a good calorie burn anyways and it is pretty nice to help your parents out! Moving and all of that is a pain in the butt which I know from much first hand experience so congrats on getting to go another year without having to deal with all of that!

And those are some interesting colors but I guess nobody can say it will look plain or gloomy!

I also hate moving and painting...we just hit our 1 year anniversary of buying our house, we painted it (ceiling, trim, walls) in every room...NEVER AGAIN. I thought we would be divorced after we finished because it made me so cranky.

Im glad you can stay put for another year!!

Moving is one of the best workouts! I moved this summer and droped a few pounds without even trying!

    Thanks so much!!

Haha!! They don't describe the colors that way, of course...the bathroom is burnt sunset, the study is cinnamon and macadamia, and the family room is Essential Gray (which looks PURPLE to me!!) It could be worse. Before the flood, my dad painted the bathroom bubblegum. Called it something else, of course, but it was PINK!! Ugh...

And it's a great workout, and I definitely want to help! I just wish I had more time to do it!!

I haven't moved in over a decade and just the thought of it makes me happy to stay where I am for the time being.

I can relate to paint colors. My mother had a small home and right before she died we had painted it in light colors which made it seem larger and brighter. Then when she died my sister moved in and painted all the walls medium brown. It was so depressing and it made everything seem closed in and dark.

My in laws went through a flood like that. We stripped everything out of the downstairs. Carpet is very heavy when it's wet! Good luck. Aren't you glad you don't have to live with the colors they chose!

I think there are some calorie counters/lists online that list calories burned moving furniture (and probably painting, as some of them list calories for careers type stuff).

You are made of tough stuff, girl! I am in awe!
