is it ok to exercise when sick?

i woke up feeling awesome while lying in bed, thinking "i'm gonna hit that gym" before heading to my 1st graders class for some in-class help. when i got out of bed and started moving around, the coughing came on. nasty coughing, green thick crap coughing. i almost opted out of working out but the setup was so perfect as the husband had the day off and could be home with the 3 yr old. "ok i'll take it easy and if i feel bad, i'll cut my workout short" i thought. when i got there, i was actually feeling ok. can the gym have magic healing powers, or what? well, 30 min of elliptical and 25 of stair stepping later, i walked out feeling like a million bucks. well...not exactally, but pretty awesome. this should be ok if our body lets us tolerate it, right? now onto the next part of my day, working 3pm to midnight. silly me didn't take a nap as i had coffee when i got home from the 1st grader's school and couldn't rest. guess if i'm truly sick, my body will have to try harder to prove it to me:)

    thanks for the helpful advice. i did end up taking a few days off, but shovelled and cleaned the house instead which has to burn some calories, right? emoticon

    It depends on how you feel. I think your body will tell you if you should rest. Hope you feel better!

    I find working up a good sweat is the best thing for me when I'm congested. It seems to get things moving. Hope you're feeling better soon! emoticon

    I usually work out when sick to a certain degree. If it's just a cough or sneezing but still feel ok, i"ll go. However if I can't breath thanks to a stuffed nose, or my body feels like it's going to fall over just from walking, yeah I stay on the couch then.

It's all about listening to your body!

    Good for you toughing out, but keep in mind that not everyone has a great immune system. Just be sure to wipe down your machines with whatever anti-bacterial cleaner they have available, and just use common manners and don't sneeze on anyone emoticon If you happen to be running a temperature though, you are most likely contagious and should not go around anyone (workout at home if you feel up to it). Keep pushing fluids to drown the bug! Take care emoticon
