Holiday eating-struggling to find my balance

Monday, December 10, 2012

All this holiday food and festivities has my appetite in a tizzie. I do all right at the parties and functions, but I come home and just go a little crazy. Then I don't want to write down what I ate and that leads to a free for all for the rest of the day. I think my task for the rest of December is going to be to track everything. Even if I do go over my calories, I will go over less than if I say "forget it" and eat whatever I want. The tracking provides a check for me, and I need to make not tracking "INO or it's not an option".

Slips are part of the journey. You are correct in saying you will be better to know the cost of the slips then to not know. The real value to me of recording what I eat is knowing the caloric value of what I eat. This helps you make decisions the next time on what is best to eat and how much to eat. You do not gain anything by not knowing. When I am tempted not to record I realize that I will feel worse not knowing. To me it is like cheating myself. God luck the rest of the season.

So hey there you don't know me. Just saw your blog post and wanted to encourage you.

Seem like your triggers occur when you are eating at home - maybe alone or when you aren't around other folks who know you are trying to lose weight. Maybe you are like someone I know who always eats wonderfully when around others but she is prone to overeat when she's by herself.

I agree - you track everything, always. Even when you eat an entire plate of Christmas cookies. Even when you just eat one. Everything.

And maybe some rules need to be make. That's what I do personally. I had an issue with my stopping after work pretty much every day at either Wendy's or a convenience store and getting either two Frosty ice creams (large, of course) at Wendy's or a big soft pretzel and a bag or two of licorice. Yeah... I'd eat the who shebang on my way home. Every day.

So I made a rule that says "I don't stop at Wendy's because I'm going to eat things there that won't help me lose this weight." and one that says "I don't buy soft pretzels and licorice because those things are one of the foods that keeps me obese."

Might sound a little silly but it works wonders.

I suspect you could create some rules which would help you avoid the pitfalls at home.

You can totally do this.

Make it a great day!
Matt
