Yesterday afternoon I called my "honey." His mom answered the phone and said he and his brother were involved with moving the washing machine. This is a gift Josue, Levi's son (my "bonus" son) got for her some months ago, but they have not been able to use it because they had to "do up" the back part of the house: Put up a roof of calaminas (corrugated steel) and do some plumbing adjustments. Meanwhile, my dear mother-in-law has been washing clothes by hand, rheumatoid arthritis notwithstanding! Anyway, while I was there this summer, Papito and Tio Armando got the roof up, and leveled the floor for the most part. So I was excited for Mami for the work it would save her. She suggested I call back later, which I did.
But there was no answer.
I called again a bit later. Still no answer.
This is unusual because someone is almost always there, at least to mind the little "bodega."
Now, I know sometimes the weather - the heavy rains (Pucallpa IS in the rain forest region) - can mess with the connections. Or their old phone might have a loose wire - I heard the ringing but perhaps it wasn't ringing for THEM.
But I couldn't - and can't - help but be concerned that in the midst of all the sweaty work, perhaps one of the brothers was injusred - or even one of Levi's aged parents suddenly took ill and was rushed to the hospital (brother-in-law Victor drives a motokar) with all the rest of the family in tow...because that's the kind of thing they do.
I made a call again this morning before going to work and still there is no answer. I AM trusting the Lord as I pray for them. But I hate not knowing what's going on.
