The toaster

Saturday, December 08, 2012

A toaster is really a simple item, but our last one has been burning toast for the last 5 years or so at the lowest setting. I never did call the manufacturer and probably should have. Today I decided it was time for a new one. The cheapest one was the same brand as the one that burnt all my toast, so I went with the next model up which was a different brand.

It has all sorts of fancy buttons and a "cool touch" exterior. I'm not sure if I care about all the extra features, but when I have my 5 year old making his waffle in the morning, the most important feature is that it shouldn't burn my food at the lowest setting.

It's amazing how the simplest item makes the rest of your day go well. When my toast or waffle comes out just right, then I can go about my day without concern. When I can't get my toast to come out right without a hassle, then my whole day can go wrong because I'm moody from having to fight a simple appliance. I haven't even mentioned that burnt toast can become a fire hazard, it was a daily frustration.

So now I have a new toaster and hopefully it will work according to how it should. I'm hoping it won't take as long to figure out this toaster as it has some and that my toast will come out just right.

Gee, I got my toaster, and one in the camper, at a thrift store, and they are still working fine. Who knew I was blessed! Long may your new toaster work, and well.

I found the best toaster is my MIL old toaster. It looks older than me and it still makes good toast most of the time. It's sad that a ancient toaster works better than most of the new ones out on the market. emoticon

Toasters---what a pain they can be. I find that different kinds of bread toast diferently in a toaster too. Of course it would be nice to remember the difference, but I usually end up the hard way every time each time I get a certain bread.

When we moved to our current house, the previous owner had installed a toaster oven, screwe into the underside of some high cabinets. Since that time, we've never had a toaster, and I will never go back to a regular toaster again. I *adore* toaster ovens. I love especially that I can warm up leftovers in there instead of in the microwave, and they taste much better!

Cook's Test Kitchen (a cooking show that airs on public television) tested 8 different makes of toasters, it was interesting to see the massive piles of toast and hear the problems described for each toaster! Many burned one side of the toast while the other side was correctly toasted, or toasted one side but not the other. They also tested the heat level on the outside of the toasters, at least 2 were hot enough to burn fingers. Very interesting study, and I don't know why it is so hard to find a good toaster!
