it's most likely IT Band syndrome at the Gerdy's tubercle attachment point.

What he did see in one of the x-rays when I was lying on my side with my knee bent, is that my kneecaps track toward the outside...not too fabulous....probably from tight ITB. He didn't seem at all worried about the ostopenia since I've already been diagnosed with arthritis and the fluid was probably caused by walking with my knee locked.
He suggested taking a couple of weeks off of running and doing cross training. Continue with the exercises, stretches and foam rolling I have been doing from when I diagnosed myself with ITB syndrome in November. Try Superfeet insoles....he noticed my knees do track a little inward when I do single-leg squat.
I should be getting a call from PT to get an appointment and will go back and see the doc in 6 weeks...sooner if things get worse or I can cancel if I'm feeling fabulous.
It is very good news. I should be running again soon and will be able to do my 8K race in March :-)

    I may have to try the insoles someday - but right now, I think that my interior thigh muscle is the weak culprit of the IT syndrome imbalance, so I'm looking at strengthening that one. I've got the foam roller, but I'm still figuring out how to make it "hurt so good"

I hope you find yourself recovering quickly and you have some good distractions. This stuff can be frustrating.

    Hi Nat,

At least you know what is going on! I hope the PT can help get you on the right track. One of the reasons I mix biking with running is to give my body a break. Biking is low impact. (A few cuts and bruises not withstanding).

I hope you heal quickly.

That is great news, emoticon for you still being able to do your race in March. How are you feeling these days. I was born with my kneecaps pointing outwards, ortho fixed one when I torn my meniscus in soccer injury but since I was not having problems with the other one he said ain't broke don't fix it! He said later I would need surgery on it but not until I start having problems with it.

    Glad to hear it wasnt anything worse! I was born with knee caps that are tilted laterally and occassionally track that way... hence ALL of my knee problems! But, PT did wonders for me, and I hope it helps you too!!

    Glad that is all it is.
Learned something new today, where my Gerdy's tubercle is located.
Hurt my IT band this summer. Within about 3 weeks of starting resistance band stretches my IT band was better and I was back to running again.
Hope yours improves at least as quickly.
