Favorite Grocery Store Closing

Friday, December 07, 2012

A couple of days ago, it was announced that Fresh & Easy stores will probably be closing. Talk about a blow! It sounds silly to be upset over a seemingly silly thing like this, but this store has been one of the main reasons I've been able to eat so healthy at such reasonable prices.

I refuse to go back to the big chain stores with their high prices, preservative junk foods, and grouchy service. I'll explore the alternative markets, even though it'll mean traveling farther and planning for less frequent shopping.

Wishing all a good day.

Not silly at all. I would definitely be upset at something like that!

That's too bad. I was fortunate to have a Kroger's that was a little further away but a much better choice than Meijer's (expensive) and Walmart (utter crap, no variety and spoiled meats and freggies).

We had two nice grocery stores here years ago, but they went out of business when Walmart and Meijer came in; those are the only two places in town now to shop for groceries. I shop at Meijer but I miss the customer service at the grocery stores, they went the extra mile. At one store, they even carried the bags out and loaded the car for you.

Something must be in the air. The same thing happened to a local small grocery store chain here in Boston. Johnny's Foodmaster had excellent prices. At first I thought they were only closing one location. Nope, they shut them all down. I was shocked !! I don't know why they closed. I didn't think they were having any financial problems because they were always busy.

Like you, I was seriously bummed out. It was a great store and now all those people are out of work. I heard that Whole Foods is taking over some of the locations. I love Whole Foods, but I can't shop there on a regular basis. it's just too expensive.

It really does stink. Try Trader Joe's. They won't have everything, but they do have good prices on the basics.

So sorry you are losing your favorite store :( Here it is the big chains that have the cheapest prices and can bring in the highest volume of fresh produce because of the sheer volume of business. But I still prefer the very expensive Farmer's Market when its operational in the summer and fall. Our fresh produce season here is so very, very short :( I am discovering the next best alternative is frozen. Since they are frozen at the time of harvesting, at their best, it doesn't matter how far they come as long as they are frozen, unlike the 'fresh' stuff. Too bad you didn't have one of those Trader Joes stores that most Americans seem to rave about.
Good luck in finding something else as good or better..

I've always shopped at Sprouts. I love their produce section! They have the prettiest produce around for really good prices. I've never had staff issues there, either. In fact, a few of them have gotten to know me over time, so I've always loved my trips there.

    Bummer....OR...
If you have to drive further, and less often, that SHOULD mean more planning ahead...which in turn should lead to greater success!

I can totally relate. I mourn the loss of places like Borders which was one of my favorite stores and local eateries too. Unfortunately places like Wal-mart - which sucks - put them out of business. We don't have much of anything around here. No book store for 70 miles.

Have you considered pea pod or green bean delivery? They can bring fresh, often organic foods to you for less than some of the chain stores. It's something you might want to check into.
