I have written about our Seminarian friends from Ghana in the past, they were here to study for the priesthood. There were 4 who came and we had the great honor to be friends with 2 of them. We met Kevin in 2009 and he introduced us to his friend Peter. They are so different from each other, and yet the best of friends. Kevin is outgoing, competitive, loud and so much fun. Peter is quiet, reserved, gentle and it took us a while to get to know him. We invited them to all our family celebrations, we had water fights in the summer and tried to take them sledding and ice fishing. They were both afraid of the lake and decided to leave the walking on water to St. Peter.
Well we were at their ordination to the Deaconate in 2011 and it was the most joy filled mass. When their classmates were ordained in May of 2012 they were not ordained at the same time. Their bishop asked them to come back and work as deacons for a while in their own diocese and be ordained on December 1st. It was hard on them to wait, but the time went by quickly with their assignments and seeing their families after 4 years of being away. They were ordained last weekend and some of their classmates who are priests here went to the ordination in Ghana! The mass took 4 hours, there was a lot of singing and rejoicing and from what they say it was glorious.
Today I am picking up 4 of those classmates at the airport. One is our assistant pastor, one is a dear friend we have known for over 8 years and the other two we know but not quite as well. I am so excited to hear about their travels and the stories of all that happened.
Please say an extra prayer today for the safe return, and for Father Kevin Abakisi and Father Peter Acudugu that they would live the gospel and serve their flocks well.
I am will try to get the picture downloaded but my computer is being naughty this morning.
