Sister-in-law Woes

Friday, December 07, 2012

About 6 or 7 years ago, my Sil, Lucky, was injured on the job. Being unable to work due to knee and back problems from the accident, she started piling on pounds. I talked her into WLS about 4 years ago. She contacted a surgeon in the Ventura, CA area, and has been trying, and trying, to get her surgery done! This last year, along about January, She called the Doctor's office to see where she stood. She hadn't heard anything from them in MONTHS! They told her they'd removed her from the program because they had "heard" that she was dead! Needless to say, she is NOT!
So, they started her back with her appointments. The first one, the Dr. asked her if she was still smoking. She told him she was. She had given it up, but when he didn't seem to be interested in her, she had gotten depressed and started smoking again. She quit that day, and hasn't smoked since! Even though everyone else in her house puffs like a chimney! So, she goes back in 6 weeks, and one of the nurses had told the Dr. that she had SEEN Lucky smoking in the parking lot just before coming in. She told the Dr. that she was being helped out of the car by her husband, who was smoking at that time.
Next, they schedule her for her surgery in April. No prep! Just show up at the hospital on such and such a day. She goes, they're wheeling her into the OR, and the anesthesiologist asks her if she had a cardiac stress test, and another test. She looked at him and told him "Nope. The surgeon just called me last week to be here today."
The problems go on and on and on. As of today, they are swearing that her primary care Dr., and the cardiologist never sent the results of the stress test. That they still haven't gotten the results of the blood test she did 2 months ago to prove that she is not smoking! No one has counselled her on her diet, except when she saw the nutritionist back in February, and was told to stay on a 1200 calorie diet.
She's at her wits end! I'm so frustrated that I can't go out there to help her! So, please, please, please! Keep her in your prayers? emoticon

Part of the problem, we think, is that this is all being handled by Workman's Comp. No surgery date, yet. Not until they find the note from her primary about the stress test, and, they get the results of that blood test for the nicotine. She has found another Dr. in Fresno, who says that if Workman's Comp will switch to him, he'll evaluate all results given him by the other Drs., do a couple of other tests, have her go through an intense session with his nutritionist, and give her the surgery within a couple of weeks. AND, (and this is a big thing with her because of mobility issues) he has all the equipment necessary for doing testing, there. Open MRI that can take up to 500 lbs. Tables, beds, chairs, xray tables, ct scanners, etc., that can handle her 400+ body.

Wow this is not good at all I work in a pharmacy you have to see a nutrionist every month plus go to a psychologist etc etc, my bosses husband is getting his done in April, he has been going to the DR. ever since the beginning of this year plus they all had to lose 50 pounds before surgery. I would document every thing if I was her. The doctors told my boss this surgery is worse than heart surgery . I will be praying for her Did they go on with the surgery, if that was me I would have jumped up off that table & start running like the devil was chasing me & gaining on me!!!!
