I often find myself thinking about how much easier it was for me to lose weight in high school. I mean, it wasn't easy, but just easier. The reason I have come to conclude is the ease of ignorance... when I was in high school, I bounced back and forth between low fat dieting and low carb (Atkins style 20g or less per day). For whatever reason, it worked. When I plateaued on one crash, I would switch. All together, over a year I lost 40-50 pounds.
After I was done losing, I steadily gained it all back... and here I am... the same weight as my freshman year in high school when the diet addiction first started (although I carry it much better as an adult). Never since then, despite my constantly increasing knowledge of health, have I been able to accomplish that goal...
Well- I know why: Knowledge is so confusing! I wouldn't trade it to go back to high school, but I wish I could make it easier to do. I went from simple, "one rule only" diets to "ok, this works best when combined with that, and we can't forget to include the other, but what if I skip this for now, I'm too hungry to think this much- oh whatever, I'll just take the big Mac." All the rules of being truly healthy, which is what I really want, can be overwhelming... Oh, and in high school, when time was no issue, I could refuse fast food without thinking twice. I really REALLY love to cook, but sometimes the time and energy just aren't there.
So, that's just it then... I need ease, I need A diet for the lazy (and the time management impaired). So that's my new goal then, simplifying a truly healthy lifestyle. That, and finding my fast food will power again. Easier just to refuse it all than to look at the overly tempting menu and choose carefully.
Anyway, the point of this blog, I find it funny how not knowing the whole truth made weight loss easier... Although, I just have to remind myself that it all came back in the end.
