Just the Right Response

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

I had a great moment a couple of weeks ago that is keeping me going now. My Honey and I ran into a friend we hadn't seen since summer. The first thing she asked is if I had lost weight. It was so thrilling that she noticed. Then she asked how I did it. I know when people ask that question they are hoping for a magic answer: a pill or a miracle shake or something like that.

In my mind after she asked that I thought of all the early mornings I roll out of bed to exercise while the house is still asleep. I thought of all the times I sat next to my husband while he eats ice cream and I have none. I thought of all the trips around my local running trails. I thought of all the extra planning and food prep I do to make sure I have healthy easy choices. But people don't really want to hear that. Deep down they already know how to loose weight. Get moving and eat less. But how to answer someone when they ask that....I was just caught off guard and didn't want to give a simple answer when I knew how much had gone into those lost pounds.

My Honey had just the right response. When my friend asked how I had lost the weight he replied, "lots and lots of hard work". Perfect! That's exactly how I did it. It's a simple answer, but I think it sums it all up.

The funny thing is, after she heard that answer, she didn't seem to want to talk about ways to loose weight. There are days I'd like a magic pill or an easy route to loose the weight I want gone. But then I wouldn't be so proud of the hard work I've put into this journey. So now when people ask I have an answer ready...lots and lots of hard work, that's how!

That is a great answer but you can also just say, "making small changes and sticking to them." The key is "change."

But, y'know, that answer will stick in her head for years to come. And maybe one day, she'll say to herself "If she can do it, so can I." That was a perfect answer. I know that I had heard someone say the same thing before, and it always stuck with me. And now I know what I'll say too, when asked.
