5K Your Way week 3 Day 1

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

Searching for that inner cheerleader tonight and found her. Thank God! I began my first day of week three tonight on the treadmill. I will NOT call it a failure, but a learning opportunity! Even if I am mad. LOL

I Got into the third interval after only being able to do 1.5 of the run on the last interval. My feet and calves were horribly cramping tonight. I am in a four hour sleep deficit from the last two days only getting 6 hrs sleep and maybe I didn't get enough water in today even though I drank my usual 2 litres before evening. Perhaps I did too much strength training yesterday? I only did the wii fit routine of yoga strength and did not do all of the exercises. Still. I tracked a lot of calorie burn yesterday. Hmmmm. Not sure. But the next two days I am not scheduled to run and will take it easier. I am not about to give up yet and will try to push through week 3.

There is a nagging voice in the back of my head reminding me that my doctor gave me my thyroid dose when I was 42 pounds lighter back in March. Perhaps I have topped out at my level for my metabolism at this point. (my thyroid was removed because of stage 2 cancer) I am not supposed to see him until March but may call the nurse just to see if that may be the problem. Until I try the intervals for W3D2, I am not going to overanalyze it and just try to be kind to myself.

Thanks so much you two! I went to the runner's shoe store today and he taught me how to lace up my shoes properly, (the ones I have are excellent running shoes he said), and sold me some super ultra insoles for them. Did the whole training session tonight with out a hitch! So relieved this was an easy fix. I am even pleased to do so well after a gluten exposure yesterday. I bought some arnica tablets that I can take after working out to help with post workout soreness. Yay!

I used bone meal for leg cramps many years ago and it worked great for me. Now I take calcium and magnesium in combination. I have not had a cramp in years.

Having been a runner (long time ago) I've dealt with cramps. It is usually water or vitamin problems. My understanding is a lack of fluids or electrolytes to balance the transfers through your muscle cells. Don't quote me on that though. I have a thyroid going bad (about 50%) and don't remember it causing cramps, just fatigue. One thing I've done for cramps is soak in a epsom salt bath and rub the affected areas, then elevate. Good luck and keep pushing.
