Running Pains

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

So I've been doing the C25k for about 8 weeks now. I'm proud of myself, let's just say that. For the past three weeks, I've been repeating Week 5 Day 1 over and over again, because I didn't believe in myself to advance and I didn't want to set myself up to failure. To further the problem, where in the beginning I used to actually enjoy the runs, I started dreading them because literally from the first time I did W5D1 EVERY SINGLE TIME I got to the third 5 min run with 3 min left to go, I got side stitches... Sometimes, I would start to get them in the second run, but whether or not I did, without fail, third run, three minutes to go every time.
I tried changing what I ate, I tried changing when I eat, I tried drinking more, drinking less, stretching more, stretching less, breathing as deeply as I could possibly come up with (my lung would hurt afterwards!).... nothing helped. Ugh!
Well, yesterday I took things into my own hands. I hit 5min on the first run and kept going. I did Week 5 Day 2! And I kicked W5D2's ass! Woohoo! It was a great run! I read earlier that day that people who breath in while they strike their right foot down are more susceptible to side stitches and cramps, so I focused on breathing on the left foot when I could. (I'm lefty so I'm sure if I'm breathing, it's on the wrong side, we do everything wrong! hehe) I also limited my water intake for about three hours prior to the run and took just one sip of water during the run. Afterwords, I couldn't stop drinking!
Anyway, no cramps. I don't know if any of my tactics worked or if Week 5 Day 1 was just cursed, but I feel a whole lot better now that I accomplished something! Go me!

LOL I think that you are awesome-- I have been repeating Week 1 Day 1 on an endless loop.

I have a HRM, and my heart would go INSANE from just one MINUTE running (sad, I know)-- spiking up to like 185-190 while I ran. But I have been running my 1-minute intervals 2-3 times a week for almost 2 months (!) and on my last 'run' I got all the way to the last interval and made it a minute and a half before my HRM started beeping at me for hitting 170 BPM. I call that a victory!

I hope to move on to the next block of runs this week. Even if it takes me 8 Months instead of 8 Weeks-- I am going to finish this!

Perseverance! We Will Run!
