Playing with the techno-toy

Tuesday, December 04, 2012

I did well with my "line in the sand" today, and went above and beyond that... lured onward by the techno-toy. There is this little GPS enabled app called RunKeeper... perhaps some of you have heard of it / used it... but I've been having serious techno-envy over MobyCarp having it, and his daughter, and my son (although he can't use it where he is at the mo...), and a brother in law... the list goes on.

Here's the deal... you head outside, tell it to start your activity, and it maps your route and calculates your distance and pace. Perfect for those long weekend training runs that are involved in marathon / half marathon plans!

So, today, I went outside to do my break walks. After all, we won't have this unseasonable weather for-ever! And tried it out. I know I walked faster knowing it was clocking me. When the little voice in my ear announced in that slow machine voice that it had been 5 minutes, 10 minutes, how far I'd gone, and my average pace? Kewl!

However, this time of year... when I really need to put in four miles after work... it's dark. So... my evening workout was on the trusty treadmill. And it felt good. Tomorrow... strength.

Now off to the showers and bedtime!

I'm still low tech, but I know I go farther when I wear my pedometer.

Kewl indeed! Hey, does this toy work in the water and on the bike, too?? Some day I'm gonna get me some cool toy, too! Thanks for sharing your experience.

I love runkeeper. I use it for walks, running, and for hiking. I've changed the setting so they don't speak to me so often, and now I get a verbal message at every half mile when hiking, and a little more often if running. I like to look at the online reports too after I save it and look on my computer at the webpage. And I have the free version. I've tried several apps but this is the one I really liked the best and continue to use.

Before I got my Garmin (Thanks, Laurie5658!), I tried several apps. RunKeeper was one of them and also one of my faves. Wring that thing out, there are a number of cool things you can do with it. You can also log and post on their site too! Have fun, Barb!

Before getting RunKeeper, I posted on the Daily Mile site. As a site, I like Daily Mile better; but my daughter was on RunKeeper, and it turns out that the RunKeeper app is the best of the free running GPS apps I tried. It's possible that the paid version of Kinetic might be better, and that one claims to interface with Daily Mile; but with family on RunKeeper, it's an easy call to stick with that one.
