I'm doing my bible study today over Colossians 3:12-14.
12)God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So you should always clothe yourselves in mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13) Forbearance and forgiveness. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. 14)Even more than all this, clothe yourself in love. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity.
I'm realizing with my bible study that this scripture isn't just for how I am to respond to others but to myself as well! That's a huge new concept for me! I say all kinds of ugly things at myself when I look in the mirror, especially when I'm getting ready for a shower!
So I have to do these things with myself as well... because I'm not only called to love others- but I love them as myself! Yes God has called me to love myself to, but in a healthy way, and by calling myself fat and ugly, poking and pinching at my body is not loving myself!
So first I define these things for myself.
Compassion - Consciousness of distress in myself and the desire to alleviate it
Kindness - doing something nice for myself, acting nice toward myself
Humility - not thinking I am better than others, or any one act was completely me
Gentleness - not hard or forceful with myself
Patience - remain calm, not annoyed with waiting for myself to complete something
Forbearance - refraining from enforcement of a debt with myself
Forgiveness - to stop feeling anger toward, stop requiring payment from myself
my hardest three are Humility, Patience, and Forbearance. When "I" do something good "I" want the credit for it and I get my feelings hurt when I'm not recognized! I hate that my body is taking so long to "look normal," and I would fast or work my body to exhaustion if I had an indulging day in the past.
But Love is what binds all these together! I will love myself, not because I'm perfect, but because God loves me. I will show these virtues to myself because God is these virtues!
See you tomorrow! - Lauren
