What is Health Coaching?

I don't get to blog much since most of the time it's just life as normal and nobody really wants to be bored with work, kids, workouts and school but I'm so excited to be attending the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I am SOOOO glad I made this decision and didn't go to school to be a dietician or nutritionist. It's not that being a dietician or nutritionist is bad - it's not. I just love the focus behind being a Health Coach. I am learning to help people take control of their OWN health. THEY make the choices. THEY lead the conversation. THEY decide what areas of their health they want to and are willing to work on. It's Spark People for people who don't want to use Spark People.
Seriously, this is a huge area of wellness that is only slightly tapped. Spark People is the BEST website for taking control of your life and health but only if you actually get on here and USE it. SP is what helped me finally get my weight off and finally figure out what works for me. But no matter how many times I have referred people here, I don't think anyone has come on and used the site like it should and can be used. They say it's to overwhelming or they just don't have the time to get on the site every day, etc. Maybe it's because it's free. Many people say that when someone pays for something they have a vested interest in getting their money out of it, which is why people will pay for a Health Coach or a Personal Trainer, etc. Who knows.
People out there need help. Dieticians and Nutritionists work. But only for some people. Some of the diets out there work. But only for some people. Spark People works. But only for some people.
What I am going to be able to do (once I get my temporary certification to start seeing clients at the six month mark around April or May) is help those people who just need an actual person to hold their hand and be their partner in their health or weight loss efforts. I will be available to really LISTEN to what they want to change about their health and help them make their own decisions about what they want to do to change. I can't wait - seriously can't. I LOVE the lectures and I love learning about this. And it's not just about weight loss. It's about your overall health. Your relationships, your work, your physical activity and your spirituality. You as a whole person.
That's why I'm so excited about this. I've finally found my calling and Spark People has played a huge part in my figuring this out for myself. It's awesome. :)
