Today's workout plan:
- 5 minutes walking to warm up
- Week 1 Day 3 of the "couch to half marathon" program: alternate running 30sec and walking 60 sec for 2 miles
- 5 minutes walking to cool down
- stretch
The results:
- 5:00 walking
- 27:40 running/walking
- 6:30 minutes walking - I needed a little extra to get back to the starting point
- total time: 39:10
- total distance: 2.625 miles (21 laps around the indoor track)
The Nat turned out to be awesome. I met up with one of my cohorts and went in as her guest. They have a quarter-mile indoor track and it wasn't excruciatingly hot while running on it (a problem I've had in the past at gyms), and I definitely ran harder than when I'm on my treadmill.
I also checked out the pool while I was there - a really nice aquatic center in general, and the lap pool is actually kept cool (the other pools are kept warm). It could be colder, but it's definitely cool enough for a half hour or more swim workout for cross training - certainly won't feel like I'm being slow cooked alive (also a problem I've had in the past at gyms).
Bonus: we ran into another coworker while we were there, and she informed us that the Nat has a corporate rate for our company! All that's left to confirm is that the local high school's swim team practices won't coincide with when I would be trying to swim (after work) - they didn't during the November schedule, and I'm hopeful they won't change things up this month. If that pans out in my favor, I'll be joining the Nat and will be even more stoked for training for the half.
Well, I'm tired and my whole body hurts from today's workouts...the 200 yards I did in the pool have killed my upper body, and the run has my legs feeling prickly and weak at the same time...wonderful precursors to extreme soreness tomorrow. I can't wait - it means I'm on the right track! :)
