A pretty good week.

Saturday, December 01, 2012

Itís been a good week. After a lot of driving Thanksgiving week (almost 60 hours on the road) itís good to not sit in a car all day. After getting home, I got right back on track watching what I eat and working out. In the past, a trip like that would send me on a long slide back to old habits.

The long trip was worth it to see some family we hadnít seen in almost 10 years. Of course, 10 years ago I was also a very different person and I was at or near my heaviest. Some of the pictures they had of me from our last visit were downright frightening. So seeing me now, near my goal weight, was a bit of a shock to them. Itís funny that the first question I get from people who havenít seen me in years is to express concern about my health. Itís hard to convince them that I feel healthier than ever. My fitness level is excellent, Iím rarely sick and my health measurements (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, etc.) are great. So, of course, everyone has to feed me. I managed to fend off a lot of the food and for the most part manage my portion size but I still ate a lot more than Iíve been used too. I didnít think it was worth it to offend them and I was comfortable that I would get back on track as soon as I got home so I just enjoyed the company and we had a great time.

So here are a couple of pictures from our trip. Do I look unhealthy? Have I gone too far with my weight loss?

Sickly?? Heck no, Dave--you look great!! You look like a man who's healthy, trim and your smile and healthy glow says it all! So don't let the family get you down. Your new size probably just came as a shock to them. They were so used to seeing you overweight, that when they saw you slim and healthy, they mispercieved it as that maybe you were ill. It's a human error.

But since I am NOT family, I can tell you that based on the pics, you look like a guy who has reached his goal and is looking good!!! Congratulations!!!

    You look healthy to me.
Great attitude, I'll get right back to it once I get back to my normal situation. Sounds like you have the self confidence and self control to keep the weight off and stay in shape.

    Hi Gene,

First, you look great and I'm proud of you for your weight loss accomplishment and successfully walking the fine line between staying on track during a holiday / family meal and eating more so not to offend your family.

I think it's interesting and irritating that people wouldn't dream of forcing a drink on an alcoholic, but see it as perfectly ok to try to force someone to eat more or more of something bad, even if they mean well. I also think it's normal for people who have only seen you heavy and not for awhile to first think you're sick when they all of a sudden see you at a healthy weight.

Congratulations on getting right back on track, and not letting this holiday road trip derail your progress!

Have a great holiday season!

Karen
