I haven't chopped down a tree or split wood since my teenage days at Ernie Swift Conservation Camp. The Wisconsin DNR used to run work camps for teenagers who wanted to work outside and make money. I stayed in a barracks in northern WI for six weeks when I was seventeen and learned lots about conservation, forestry and the fact that I could split wood right alongside the boys - all day - for a week. I worked my behind off...
This afternoon, the warm weather lured me outside and I cleared a lot of small trees and brush in our wild area. The muscle memory of a proper ax swing came back to me as soon as the ax was in my hand. For a moment, I felt seventeen again...I suppose tomorrow I'll feel more like seventy. It's all good.
