Nephew Getting Fitter!

Friday, November 30, 2012

My nephew was in the hospital with ketoacidosis due to diabetes just over a month ago. He's 27 years old and didn't even know he was diabetic before the life-threatening incident.

Since he got out of the hospital, he's become a vegan. He is regularly testing his blood sugar and usually has it in the range the doctor recommends. I bought him athletic shoes and workout clothes which are getting good use. We've walked the lake together at least once a week and he's doing it almost every day. Plus he started Crossfit training.

He's also going with me to Weight Watchers usually on Friday mornings. This morning we walked the lake after the meeting. In the past I've had to slow down for him. Today he stayed up with my pace. He had to jog some to stay up with my walking pace, but he was proud he could do it. (I was pushing Gwen in the stroller, too.) He even talked about working toward a 5K, 10K, and half marthon. Could happen!!

His clothes are fitting better and he looks like he has lost weight. People even are commenting. He is eating lots of whole grains, fruits and veggies. But his loss hasn't really shown up on the scale. I've decided that it is fine. He is very motivated to stay out of the hospital and gain fitness. I think he's going to do it!

This is wonderful news!! Sorry it took such a drastic health scare, but it looks like he has been sold on living a healthy lifestyle! He is so very lucky to have such an amazing, caring aunt to guide him along the path, leading by example!
That would be really awesome were he to join you on a race some day!!! I can see it happening! Guys do tend to build muscle faster, no wonder he is toning without losing it on the scale, but as we all should know that is not the only way to measure progress ;)
Enjoy your weekend!

Fantastic I'm sure you've been his inspiration to get started . . . what a great support you've provided. And once he starts feeling and looking better . . . there's a good chance he'll keep at it.

So glad your nephew is following the healthy example you're setting. We both know he's the one keeping up his motivation, but to be there to support him... he's so lucky to have you!

What great news! Too often it seems that people ignore what they CAN do in favor of drugs, procedures, and doctors. He's chosen a much better path. I'm proud WITH you FOR him!!

Super news re: your nephew. So glad he's 'coming along' and becoming healthier. Obviously he's losing fat, because his clothes fit better; and don't forget, muscle weighs more than fat, so that could be why the scale isn't budging yet. It'll come.
