So, it's been almost a month since I've posted a blog and it's time to update!
I ended my juice fast about a month ago at Day 32. Since then I've eaten 90% healthy and vegan, with the occasional treat or animal product. I gained five pounds after ending the fast, which I expected due to food being in the system, etc. However, I became really frustrated as I realized that I was not losing any weight. I wasn't gaining past the quick initial 5 pound gain, but I wasn't losing. I didn't want to have to start counting calories. Perhaps it was the occasional treat that was keeping me from losing. A bite here and there, a few extra cashews snacked on, etc. So, after much inner conflict, I began another juice fast on November 25. This one isn't quite as extreme as the first one however. This time, I'm drinking a litre of green juice mixed with about three cups of almost milk, 1/4 cup vegan protein powder, and 2 tbsp. of flax, chia, and/or hemp. I'm also still drinking coffee and soy lattes from Starbucks. I also usually make a fruit juice everyday. After four days, I dropped the five pounds I gained, and my stomach is flatter. Today is Day 5 and I'm planning to go a week. So I'm hoping these last few days will help me lose another 3-4 pounds. My plan is to go in three week cycles: juice for a week, blend for a week (fruit/veggie smoothies, blended soups, include avocado and banana in smoothies, etc), and eat 100% healthy vegan for 6 days with the 7th day being a treat day. The treat day won't be an all out pizza, chips, soda, fries, ice cream, etc. day because I know I'd feel disgusting. For the first treat day what I would like to do is have an egg scramble or quiche with 3-4 free-range, ethically treated eggs, and some Daiya cheese, or maybe even regular cheese. To be honest the only animal product I REALLY miss is eggs. I miss cheese as well, but I didn't eat huge amounts of it before, so it's not as noticeable.
Speaking of cheese, I made some vegan cheese a little while ago and it was suprisingly yummy and even came out as a firm block. It's made with cashews, nutritional yeast, and a few other things. The secret? Agar agar, which gives it the block-like firm consistency. It didn't taste like cheese, and was a little bit softer than the average block of cheddar or mozzarella; but it was definitely slice-able and had a delicious and yummy savory flavor. Yum!
I'm continuing to run, although running in snow, ice, and cold has taken some extra effort and a few supplies. I dress in a lot of layers. To keep warm and safe this is what I wear:
Legs:1-2 pairs of leggings($5, second hand store) and yoga pants($5, second hand store)
Upper body: 2 tank tops, technical running shirt ($20, Wal-Mart) light weight fleece lined running jacket ($5 or $10, second hand store)
Head/Face: Face mask ($32, SportChek)
Runners: Nike (got them basically brand new from a friend's neighbor for $30!! She has a habit of buying things for the sake of buying them, not to use/wear them. Great deal for me lol)
Traction for shoes: Yak Trax ($40, Mountain Equipment Co-Op)
I'm a bit disappointed in my YakTrax, because the small amount of running on pavement that I've done has really worn them down, and even broken them in places-this happened after only three runs :( They do work great on snowy/icy surfaces, though.
I also use the Nike running app, as well as an app called RunKeeper which has different training programs on it. I found that if I hold my iPhone in my hand, it gets cold and shuts off after 15 minutes. So, I wrap it in plastic wrap and put it in my pocket. It's been about an hour this way with no issues so far. Yay :)
I bought two Jillian Michaels workout DVDs on amazon for $10 each. The kickboxing one came in the mail yesterday, so I did the first 20 minute workout, and let me tell you, it kicked my butt! LOL I ordered the DVDs because I want to work on getting toned and building some muscle, but I get SUPER bored just lifting free weights. The kickboxing was a lot of fun! I plan to run 4 days per week and do Jillian Michaels 2-3 days per week.
