This race came about because, for very good reasons, DSSECRETS gave it as a counter proposal to my Disney Wine & Dine Half idea to celebrate our15th Anniversary. The choice was perfect!
Friday morn and we were off! It took us about 2 3/4 hours to get to Melbourne from Dunedin, FL. We wanted to do race check in & pick-up the day before the race at Running Zone!
Immediately after we checked in and bought some race items, we took off to Beef O'Brady's close by so we could catch the Nebraska - Iowa game. (Yes, Laurie, it was closer than you predicted!) Go Big Red!
We finally checked into the Hampton Inn on Cocoa Beach, went to a late dinner in Port Canaveral and shared Lobster Bisque, a delicious Scallop Risotto and a mint for dessert!
After dinner, we did a late night stop at Ron Jon's Surf Shop open 24 hours a day! We had to walk our meal off!
I had been waiting 38 years to visit this place and finally did!
Needless to say, we slept good. We ate a healthy breakfast in the hotel and took off to Kennedy Space Center(KSC) for the Health & Fitness Expo. It was relatively small compared to the big ones we've attended in the Tampa Bay area but this was unique!
We confirmed our reservations for the Pre-Race Dinner later in the evening then proceeded to do some serious race shopping. D & I scored a great book from Bart Yasso and Runner's World. Oh, yeah, we finally got to meet him!
More on Bart later...
D scored some great race jewelry commemorating this HM, we won 2 tech shirts from last year's race, and I haggled with Natalie's Natural Orange Juice for their tech race shirt! I also bought a Brooks Space Coast HM hat as I love racing in light colored hats! We decided we did enough damage for the moment and went back to the hotel to relax for the main evening evening event.
A few hours later, we were back at KSC to attend the Pre-Race Dinner. We had some time so went back into the Expo before it closed. A Space Coast Runners member gave me one of their club hats. (I tried to get one from one of the member volunteers earlier in the day to no avail!)
As we waited for the BUS shuttle to take us to the KSC Visitor Complex Apollo/Saturn V Center, we saw a good opportunity!
Yes, we are considering this for our 2012 Christmas Card!
We finally got on the shuttle to the Dinner, passing the Vertical Assembly Building, the largest single-story building in the world. This photo doesn't come close to sampling it's size.
We had finally arrived for dinner!
But first a video briefing!
Then to a replica of Mission Control with the real consoles used!
We commenced to experience a space shuttle launch viewing!
So excited, we made it into the main hall for dinner!
A Pre-Race carb loading buffet of pasta, lasagna, chicken picatta, olive orzo, and salad awaited!
Are ya kidding me? Canolis, Tiramisu & fruit!
After using extreme portion control, we finally got to hear from Astronaut Mike McCulley, a runner!
Apologies to Mike for my camera work on this one.
Our Keynote Speaker, Bart Yasso with Race Director Extraordinaire Denise Piercy!
I was lucky enough to spend time with both of them throughout the race days. I learned a lot! Oh, Denise recognized the lady that gave me the Space Coast Runners hat...she was the President of the group, Carol Ball! Thanks, Carol!
Thanks for taking the time to read this blog. I wanted to share the entire experience with you all! I also highly recommend this entire event! It's "The planet's only space-themed marathon & half marathon!"
Next: RACE DAY!
