Sleep Challenge Day 1

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

So, I finally joined the sleep challenge. During this month, I am supposed to start out by keeping a sleep journal everyday. So, I will probably just add it to my blog each day so I can keep track easier and be held accountable. Which MEANS that I will be recording everything I do, even the not-so-diet friendly choices. I'm saying this now, because last night I gave in to fast food! I felt soooo rushed, that I just did it. I tried to keep it low portion and as healthy as can be done at a fast food place. I finished up my last official weekly counseling session last night after 5 painstaking months, rushed over to my aqua attack class and then had to go hunt down some vitamin D supplements. My doctor called with my results yesterday and started me on 5000 mcg of D3 everyday due to a deficiency. After a little research, I have my old blood pressure meds to thank for that! emoticon Small steps..in the right direction every day! On that note, have been holding my own with the blood pressure at a steady of about 122/78. Not too shabby! And, I LOVE my new swimming classes! So, here goes for my first sleep journal. The way this works is, I filled out the top part last night for the morning, and filled out the bottom portion about last night's sleep. So, when I do tomorrow's, it will actually be for all of today. Here goes!

Filled out last night:
1.What time did you wake up today? 7:05 am
2.What time are you lying down to go to sleep? 11:30
3.What, if any, was your bedtime routine? Went to counseling, then to swim class, to the store, grabbed dinner on the go, watched a little tv with the hubby, and read for a while to wind down.
4.What were the last food(s) you consumed tonight? (Include type, amount, and time you ate.) a chicken taco and bean burrito.
5.Did you exercise today? (Include the type, duration, and time of day if you exercised.) YES!!! 75 minutes of swimming!
6.Did you consume any alcoholic beverages today? (Include type, number, and time of day.) Nope.
7.Did you consume any caffeinated drinks or foods today? (Include type, number, and time of day.) 2 cups of coffee before noon. emoticon I know it was wrong...but I had two cokes. I'm ashamed. emoticon
8.Did you take any medications (prescription and/or over-the-counter) today? (Include type, amount, and time of day.) Women's daily multi; vitamin B2; glucosamine chondroitin; calcium/magnesium; power to sleep PM.
9.Did you take any naps today? (Include number of naps, duration of each, and time of day.) none
10.What types of stressors did you encounter today, and what types do you expect to encounter tomorrow? Today: getting everywhere on time, while being exhausted. Tomorrow: New swim class; getting groceries, financial stress, getting the house clean...hopefully.
11.How hungry did you feel today? (1- Not hungry, 2- Normal hunger, 3- Strong hunger, 4- Extreme hunger) 2-normal
12.How awake did you feel today? (1- Exhausted, 2- Somewhat tired, 3- Fairly alert, 4- Wide awake) 2-somewhat tired
13.How irritable did you feel today? (1- Calm, 2- Slightly annoyed, 3- Moderately irritable, 4- Highly irritable) 1-calm

This morning:
1.How long did it take you to fall asleep last night? (This may be an estimate.) About ten minutes thanks to swimming and power to sleep supplements!
2.How many times did you wake up during the night? (Include times you woke up and how long you stayed awake.) None...for once.
3.In total, how many hours did you sleep last night? about 6-7 I think.

This sounds like you are headed in the right direction! 6-7 is pretty good! I hope this works for you!! Does this sleep medicine have any side effects? Like leaving you groggy in the morning or giving you headaches?
Well done with the blood pressure and swimming!
    You go girl!!

Sounds like you're going to get a handle on this sleep stuff once and for all!

Keep us posted about the sleep supplements, if you would...my 17yo son has trouble getting to sleep at night, and I'd like a non-prescription/non-chemical way of helping him.
