WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

HAVING JUST PASSED THANKSGIVING, I CAME ACROSS A SAYING ON PINTEREST THAT REALLY BLEW ME AWAY. "WHAT IF YOU WOKE UP TOMORROW WITH ONLY THE THINGS THAT YOU GAVE THANKS FOR TODAY?" THINK ABOUT THAT! ALL THE THINGS THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED COULD BE GONE IS A BLINK OF AN EYE. WHAT COULD YOU DO WITHOUT?

I REALLY HAD TO GIVE THIS SOME SOLID THOUGHT. I AM THANKFUL FOR SOME OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS, A PLACE TO LIVE, FOOD TO EAT, CLOTHES TO KEEP ME COVERED, HEAT AND AIR (SINCE I CAN'T CONTROL MY BODY TEMPERATURE), A JOB FOR MY HUSBAND, THE ABILITY TO MAKE DO WITH LITTLE, THE ABILITY TO COOK WELL SINCE NO ONE TAUGHT ME. ELECTRICITY WOULD BE ESSENTIAL FOR THE HEAT AND AIR BUT COULD YOU LIVE WITHOUT IT? THE REST OF IT IS NOT REALLY ESSENTIAL.

I DON'T NEED TV, 18 DIFFERENT KITCHEN APPLIANCES, A BLU-RAY DVD PLAYER OR THE VCR. A RADIO WOULD BE NICE BUT NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. ELECTRICITY WOULD BE NICE BUT CAN YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT IT? I DID WHEN I HAD TO LIVE IN MY CAR FOR THREE MONTHS, IN THE WINTER, IN WISCONSIN. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT YOU CAN DO WITHOUT.

WHAT ABOUT WATER? THAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR BOTH COOKING AND CLEANING - BOTH YOUR OWN BODY AND WHATEVER YOU COOK WITH AND WHATEVER YOU WEAR AND EAT. IF IT IS HOME GROWN, IT STILL NEEDS TO BE WASHED OFF BEFORE YOU EAT IT. AND WHAT ABOUT THAT? DO YOU HAVE A PLACE WHERE YOU COULD GROW YOUR OWN FOOD F YOU HAD TO? COULD YOU TRADE FOOD FOR A SERVICE THAT YOU CAN PERFORM FOR SOMEONE?

WE ARE A VERY, VERY SPOILED SOCIETY. MOST OF US COULD NOT SURVIVE IF WE HAD TO GO BACK TO PRIMITIVE TIMES. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS IS THAT I CANNOT DO WITHOUT? I THANK GOD EVERY NIGHT NOW, FOR THE GIFTS HE HAS INSTILLED IN OTHER PEOPLE THAT MAKE MY LIFE MORE ENJOYABLE. I THANK HIM FOR THE AUTHORS, THE ENTERTAINERS THAT CAN SING AND DANCE; THE ARTISTS AND GIFTED CRAFTSMEN. THEM I CANNOT DO WITHOUT.

BUT MORE THAN ALL OF THESE, I THANK GOD THAT I LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT STILL ALLOWS ME TO WORSHIP FREELY, THE GOD OF MY CHOICE. IF YOU ARE NOT A BELIEVER, THIS BLOG WILL MEAN NOTHING TO YOU. BUT I BELIEVE THAT GOD CONTROLS EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THIS UNIVERSE. WHAT HE ALLOWS IS ANOTHER THING ALTOGETHER. BUT HOW LONG WILL HE LET MAN DESTROY HIS EARTH, LET US KILL EACH OTHER, AND LET US WASTE SO VERY, VERY MUCH? MAYBE WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT JUST WHAT WE ARE REALLY THANKFUL FOR AND WHERE IT ALL CAME FROM.

You said you are thankful for others.

Authors. People who make your life worth while and of course your Lord number one.

You are here writing for a reason.

Your stories touch people. You are a gifted writer.

I am a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.

With out him. I am nothing.

He is my breath in the morning and at night when I sleep.

He is my bright morning light.

He is the beginning and the end.

He is Alpha and Omega.

He is the My Heavenly Father.

Erin, What a beautiful blog!! Thank you for the reminder that we need to tell God what we are thankful for and not just assume He knows. We ARE a spoiled people and a spoiled nation. We take so much for granted and are not nearly thankful enough for all we have. Today I am very thankful for my friends, family, enough food to eat, enough water to drink, and a roof over my head. But that really only scratches the surface of all for which I am thankful. Have a great day, my Spark friend! Hugz coming your way!!

Erin: I so agree with you. I am so very thankful for ALL Gods blessings, but you are right I'm very careless about telling him everyday. So I think I'm going to start morning with a prayer of Thanksgiving for specific things. So today I'm starting with being Thankful for, pure and clean running water, the very air that I breathe, etc.

Thank you for sharing: CJ from OK. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

These are wonderful thoughts, Erin! As a nation we have been truly blessed by God. I wonder what will happen if we continue to ignore him: I pray we turn back to Him so we don't have to find out. Being grateful also keeps us humble, because we are acknowledging that all we have is not due to our own efforts, but are the blessing of God.

Erin, what a beautiful blog!!! I agree with you - we are a very spoiled people. We take so much for granted. You talked about water, we also have to drink it. We all can do without the material things in our life, but we sure do need the God-given things to let us live. (hugs) Noel

I am grateful every single morning just to still be alive. I have had cancer, have watched others close to me die of cancer, and so far I survive. So yes, I'm grateful for all the things you mention, but first and foremost, to be alive.

I came across that saying last spring and have thought about it often. I think if we all started a gratitude journal we would be amazed to see all the things we are thankful for but never say. If we only picked 3 things a day we could never thank God enough for all we have and all we are. Good blog Erin! emoticon
