Make it Fun and it Will Get Done (with credit to FlyLady.net)

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Many thanks to FORBANDE for turning me on to FlyLady.net. It's kind of a hokey site & concept, but for everyone who gets a little overwhelmed by all of their responsibilities, the methods employed are SO helpful. Besides, hokey is fun!! So check out her site and prepare to chuckle. But now, on to the point...

All my life I've struggled with self-control in the face of yummy food. I've tried to figure out why - am I unable to control myself? Willfully rebelling social norms? Oblivious to the dangers of eating garbage? I've unfortunately not found an answer.

I know eating healthy is required. I know that doing so will help me lose weight, improve my health, and possibly lead to a longer life. But I just don't do it. I was talking to my trainer last night, and he kept pushing me to figure it out and make the changes I need to make. (The scale's been stuck for a few months, so we're both frustrated.) After he made yet another comment about eating healthy, I shot back - "But it's not FUN to eat healthy! It's boring. Playing by the rules doesn't make for a fun party!"

So I had an Aha Moment. I'm a whiny, immature brat who only wants to have fun.

But, hey! Let's see if I can't use this to my advantage. Working out is fun, so I have no trouble getting to the gym. Solving puzzles is fun, so I have no trouble doing my homework and figuring out the answers. Building something out of nothing is fun, so I have no trouble going to work every day.

So how do I make eating healthy fun?

First I looked at foods I think are fun to eat. Then I broke those down into attributes. (Can you tell I'm an analyst? What's fun to me is probably boring to most!!)

So, fun food (for me) is food that is:
-cold and sweet
-warm and chewy
-salty
-bite-sized
-served on a stick, eaten with hands, or otherwise non-standard (like twirling noodles on a fork)
-dippable
-bready or doughy
-greasy
-decadent
-crispy or crunchy
-gooey, creamy, or mushy
-fun to say (who doesn't love a schnitzel!?!)
-meaty

Now, the challenge. What healthy foods can meet these qualities? Obviously they don't all go together, but the more that are covered, the less likely I am to be able to walk away from the food. Stayed tuned as I develop my very own party path to healthy eating. (And please - send me your suggestions! I need all the help I can get. Anyway, parties are more fun when you have more guests, right?)

We are so much a like Jen!

My weakness is always sweets. So when ever I get a craving for something sweet, I make myself a chocolate protein shake. Or just drinking hot chocolate sometimes does the trick.

But you can make healthy food fun! We sometimes do fruit kabobs or chicken on a stick and grilled with pineapple and green peppers. Very nummy! Or try freezing grapes!

Lots of ways to make food fun!
